Question----I recently did a high speed run (broke 200 mph). During the run the HUD reached 186 mph, but would not progress beyone same, even though of course the speedometer continued to increase (as you would expect).

Anyone know why the HUD stopped at 186 mph?
The top speed for a Z51 6 sp manual Coupe is 186. I suppose the software that drives the HUD display will not displaya number <186.

Jim fill out your profile (pet peeve) What are you driving a jet. Stock C6 is limited to 186 by the stock tune parameters, my tuner remove the limit but fastest I've gone is 173 on a closed airport runway.
I would argue that it is a simple software limitation. Others have found this "186" while scanning the cars computers during tuning. The value can be changed with an editor. People have claimed that it is a Governor of sorts but all indications are that the car is gear limited and not in fact governed. The 186 may in fact be a "max display" for the software, while the speedo is cabled.

All indications I've seen show that the car is not in fact tune limited but a mechanical limitation due to gearing and drag. You can make the 186 anything you want but the car will simply top out at 186 (in fifth gear) mechanically. I'm still not sure how the OP's car went to 200 if it was straight and level.
