Have had several people ask me about this......Seems there has been more than a few C6 (2005) had fire issue after a side impact. It appears the gas filler neck is not connected properly and the sparks ignite the car. Actually had happened to a friend's boyfriend who was burned badly. They claimed it also has happend to Dale Earnhart with his street Vette. I do know he just picked up a Zo6 about a month ago at the Bowling Green. The person telling all this does not know if there was a TSB on this or if it even applies to the 2006-2007???
Anybody like Shopdog have anything on this??
I haven't heard of a TSB on that but maybe there's something to it. When I once had a 'check gas cap' warning on the DIC I called the dealership to see about picking-up a replacement gas cap....the service advisor didn't want to just give me a gas cap....he mentioned wanting to inspect the filler neck for a possible 'venting' problem. I never had another 'check gas cap' warning so I didn't pursue it.
As far as Dale Earnhart's street Vette....I vaguely recall when it was listed for sale....the ad didn't mention 'fresh paint.'
The C6 Corvette meets or exceeds all FMVSS standards for side impact.
Any vehicle, containing gasoline in the fuel tank, when exposed to a severe impact, has a potential for a thermal incident.
Spoken like a true Engineer.....safe but uninformative....According to the investigator the neck is was not properly sealed and that was the cause of the fire...not thermal. The National Safety Board is supposely involved as well. Very rarely will a side impact result in fire.
Keep in mind all cars meet FMVSS standards for side impact..when properly assembled...

Who is they? Read post above, there was no mention of new paint when Earnhart sold the Vette.

"They" are a group of about 15 professional people I met at a party in Atlanta several weeks back. Most were Doctors who were into the sports car groups. It came up in conversation and then a personal friend of mine asked straight out if i had had mine checked for "that fire thing" that was goin on with the Vettes.??? First I had heard of this... You are right , on Ebay it did not say fresh paint but did't it have some customer paint work done to it??? Not that that matters but I do know he has picked up his new Z06. He lives about 150 miles from here so i might try and find out that way.

The Only burn issue that I am aware of with Dale Jr. was the C5R he wrecked at (I believe) Sonoma/Infeneon.

This is how roomers start. Some know it all spouts with authority and everyone believes them. Maybe he drives a BMW or other SC not a Corvette and just wants to start something.

There seems to be some mixed information in here. The incident involving Dale Earnhart Jr. was in one of the Corvette Race cars at Infineon Raceway, not in his street car. It happend on the out lap with a full tank and full fuel kneck. He got the car loose and impacted the drivers side rear quarter in the spin. The impact disloged the fuel filler kneck and the spilling gasoline contacted the hot exhaust and combusted.
Regarding the production cars, I haven't seen anything about this in the form of a TSB or actually even any reports on the subject regarding the '05's. I'm curious to see if there is anything to this.
Hard to imagine bad news about the C6 not showing up here.
I'm reading this forum pretty much every day and have never heard anything along these lines. And history has shown that this forum seems to find things out long before GM states any knowledge of an issue.
I spoke with a buddy & forum member this past weekend at our corvette get together, he asked his insurance company why his C6 insurance was so low.
The company told him the C6 is rated as well as a Volvo according to their insurance company in a crash for fatalities & theft. ZO6 is the complete opposite as far as rates.

That incident is obviously the basis for this rumor. Amazing how "Dale Jr. can't drive" turns into "Corvettes=Pinto".
Yea I agree with most all the responses...I felt we on this forum would know before most anyone else...i never actually put it to Dale's on track incident. One of the people in this discussion was a woman who really was convinced the C6 was a death trap. It was not easy to walk away from such a stupid statement but i did.
As far as I am concerned there is no real reason to be concerned but i did want to put it out for comment on this forum.
