Default Auto Trunk Latch

I'm wondering what's the deal with my auto trunk latch. I have to push down pretty hard on it, for it to engage. But, it will engage. When I first got my car, it squeezed down by itself, from the resting position.

I have disconnected the battery, a couple of times, for the Vararam install. And, have had to reposition the outside mirrors and reindex the windows.

Any suggestions?

I do not know what you mean by 'pretty hard'. If my doors/windows are shut, I lower the hatch and give it a light but deliberate push and the power pull-down mechanism takes over. It never has pulled down from a lowered resting position without a push.

I mean that, from the resting position, it's not just a gentle push, but a little more forceful one. More than I normally would have thought. Guess my rubber seal is really good.

I just checked a couple of other places.

It seems that, if the windows are down alittle, or the doors are open, it works just fine from the resting position. However, if windows are up, or doors closed, you do have to push with a little force, to get the motor to engage.

I just went out to try it again, as descibed above, and it works normally. Funny about that being the factor.

Only time I had a problem with that latch was when I put an extra large body back there. According to America's Most Wanted, most people who store bodies back there, trim the fat a little so that there is less stress put on the latch.

Mine is tempermental. At times lowering the hatch with the handle on the right side I lower it to about 6 inches and let it go. It probably works about 75% of the time. Also, check where the window shade connects near the latch and make sure it is pushed all the way up.

That's right. It's not the gasket; it's the casket.

I rest the hatch on the latching mechanism and give it a firm, sharp push down....not "hard' but firm enough to engage the pull-down mechanism.

Thanks Wayne.

Yep. I understand now. That is the normal method, when the windows are up.

Mine is ok then.
