Oh, they date back to the C2's and the racing Corvettes, aka Grand Sport.
The stripes (only on driver's side) were resurrected in '96 for the GS, and the last year of the C4 to commemorate the Grand Sports by having a one-off color (blue), a large center stripe, a 330 hp engine (the LT4, one year), AND bright red fender stripes reminiscent of the original, Grand Sports.
The "RF" aka the Ron Fellows Z06 seems to have fender stripes, however, on both the driver's and passenger side. A new design.
The above is total . If you like them, do them. I have a 2006 LMB coupe, and I put some dark silver met. stripes on the left side. They look great. I had a local sign shop cut the vinyl (3M 10 year vinyl, slate met. is the actual color) and install it in about 10 minutes. $25 total. I think it looks fantastic, and I don't care if anyone else likes them or not.
I've also seen those stripes referred to as 'rookie stripes.' I don't know how Ron Fellows would react to that but if you like them...do it. My only suggestion would be to make sure you like them and have them painted on by a quality shop.

Here is my suggestion and not because I own the stripes bussiness
Don't paint because it will cost you $300 or so and then will take another $2000 hit when resale since not all people likes stripes
