Default Replacement windshield

A rock got kicked up and put a BB hole crack in the windshield yesterday. Today a 12" horizontal crack formed. Good thing I get it replaced tomorrow. Any idea if the windshield for cars with heads up display are different from standard? I have nav system and believe the windshield for those cars is different as well.

Yes the WS for the HUD is different then the standard WS. The HUD WS must be highly reflective and contains a special film between the glass that helps to maintain focus for you to see a clear image of the display.

That's a truism...I had to replace my windshield about a month after getting the car, over 2 years ago, and they made SURE I needed one for the HUD...It was over $1000, and luckily I had $100 deductable comprehensive...

There is a difference between the HUD windshield and the non-HUD windshield. There is a reflective material that is laminated in between the layers of safety glass in the area of the HUD projection to increase viewability of the HUD in high glare situations.

For what it is worth, the HUD is perfectly readable on a standard windshield in 95% of all lighting conditions. Just something to keep in mind if the insurance folks give you trouble about the added cost of the HUD windshield. The difference is $400 - $500 dollars between to two.

Thats a pretty hefty premium for a piece of plastic film.

Actually, the only difference between the HUD windshield and the non-HUD windshield is the amount of polishing the laminate layer receives. All modern safety glass has a polycarbonate laminate between the sheets of glass. The materials in the 2 windshields are EXACTLY the same, except the laminate for a HUD windshield gets polished more to increase its reflectivity so the HUD shows up a little more clearly than in the "regular" glass. That's it - it's about 5 extra minutes in the factory to get the extra polish. They are charging a premium because it is a "premium" product!

All good info above. To address the OP's other question, there is no special windshield for the nav. However, there is a special windshield if you have OnStar that has an additional blacked-out area to the right of the mirror to hide the OnStar antenna. So there are three different C6 windshields: base, HUD, and HUD + OnStar. There is no base + OnStar windshield because you can't buy a C6 with OnStar and without HUD the way the trim packages are put together.

Isnt it 4 windshields then?

When I got my price on my replacement they checked off Navigation and HUD, and I do not have on star.

When they checked off navigation I think they they meant GPS. Onstar has to know where you are in case of emergency.

Make sure that if you ask the dealer to tighten a floppy rearview mirror that you factor in the possibility they will crack the windshield.............

I lowered my comp deduct to $50 from 500. With USAA, it's 5 bucks more a month. Two stone chips already, just a matter of time. Good insurance bet, at least here in granite pebble country...

Default Just Replaced the Windshield & it's Defective !

Yep, had a nice crack aacross the passenger side, the guys at the glass place did a super job of installing it, but there's a foggy area that just won't clean. I suspect it's the laminate as no matter what we've tried, lens cleaner, alcohol, vinegar etc, the fogging doesn't change. This was a windshield straight from the Chevy dealer.
