I'd have to believe for an older unit to work with this (in terms of using the NAV screen to control the iPod) that a software update would be needed. The graphics and buttons on the nav screen would be built into the nav unit. The iPod is just feeding data. So unless older C6 Nav's had this feature disabled for many years, a software update would be required.

Not necessarily true. The Head unit does not have any "Ipod interface" built in. It should work just like the current Ipod units work with the Nav. They take over one of the XM screens and use that real estate. The buttons and logic are contained on the external unit. Many (most) of the current units seem to plug in via the XM box in the back. There is very little if any change to the '08 Nav headunit from the ones in the '05-'07 cars.

It's been delayed for more than a year. Let's see if they actually release it in September.

One thing I'm concerned about is whether the HU will be able to handle the huge amount of songs. Scrolling through MP3 CDs is sluggish. What about a 30gig ipod full of songs!

For $160 + installation I'm all over this. Plus I found this buried in the text.

"Once the device is installed, the customer plugs the iPod into an interface cable in the glove box, where the player can be safely secured and stowed. The device also charges the iPod while the vehicle is operating."

So that answers that buring question.

Not so sure. I have an AVIC-D2 that has an ipod interface. If I wanted to get the much better interface offered by the newer unit, I'd have to get the newer unit. The iPod interface itself is the same for both units, so obviously the "look" isn't contained in the interface.

I'd say the interface just allows data to be passed back and forth between the HU and the iPod. However, the GUI if you will is contained in the HU (Nav). Prior to the '08 I'd assume they would have had to build some logic into the nav unit in order to present iPod data in a way that makes sense. Now if the built-in Nav has an XM interface that would also work for an iPod, then I suppose the Nav doesn't care where the data is coming from. I haven't really seen what the GUI looks like, but I'd think they would have it work differently than XM.

Agree with Dollarbill . . . hard to believe that a car as electronically sophisticated as a Corvette does not have Bluetooth

I hope they took the time to engineer this right and not half-assed.

That's cool Dave, at least it sounds like it will arrive in the timeline they discussd at the 2008 Press event in April. To bad it has to be an accessory item.

Awesome - I have been using the Nucleus and it works, sort of, but screws up the XM station display. I am ready for a real solution!

Maybe the NAV will need to be flashed to support the IPOD interface. This would allow the IPOD to have it's own dedicated NAV interface screen.

If they developed the product right

Sounds like they want to do it right:

"We know our music-loving customers have been clamoring for a system like this, but we were determined not to go into the market with one unless it was truly integrated, easy to use and affordable," said Philippart. "I think this system will be music to our customers' ears."

* Seamlessly connects an iPod to the vehicle's factory installed audio system
* Charges iPod when ignition is on
* Choose from English, Spanish or French language for function displays
* Search and display music by genre, playlist, album, artist
* Use seek function to move forward or reverse within a song for up to 15 seconds
* Select "shuffle" function to mix music
* Sort music using "alphabetical jump" from A-Z list
* Sort and select Podcasts and audio books by title
* Control volume from steering wheel controls
* Personalize text display in dynamic mode (radio display scrolls through artist, album, title, song, time remaining, etc.) or static mode (fixed on one display element such as artist)
* Perform fast music searches using high-speed text display technology

I wonder if the console is going to be a safe place to store an Ipod as warm as that area gets?

At least from this point forward all the new cars with Nav should come from the factory this way, for what they make you pay for the Nav.

the Lotus Exige is a no frills race car and comes with an IPOD connection, the corvette on the other hand make you pay for it after the fact on a fully options car LOL.

I just hope the sound quality is good, can't wait to get this.

Will they be selling this over the counter as I don't trust anyone else to do my audio installs?

I have given up on a GM solution and am getting the Pioneer nav with Bluetooth and iPod connections. It is around $1,200 and has everything we want done in one unit.
