I ordered the A6 as a compromise for the wife to enjoy. I do miss the manual, but I want my wife to enjoy the experience as well. I have tried to teach her how to drive a manual on multiple occasions and she almost tore out the rear end. I couldn't bear watching that disaster again on my vette.
My father bought a C4 auto for the exact same reason and my parents love that car. I've driven that car and have to say, it's not too bad. I have a C6 manual and a wife who can drive a manual. If I were you, I'd try teaching her to drive the manual. If she wants nothing to do with that, then I'm sure you'll love the auto. 400 bhp is 400 bhp no matter how it's getting to the pavement. Good luck with your decision.
Thanks to all who have replied and to those who resisted the temptation to say what I have been thinking!! Just kidding but it is a moot point as we have ordered an 08 A6 3LT Z51 Silver Coupe, two tone titanium seats, exhaust, navigation/Stereo upgrade with museum delivery and now just await a date. The things we do for love - both of us!

Ordered the same, but M6 and waiting for the date. And have a wife for 41+ years who will only drive stick.
You should get what you want. Personally, I would not want a C6 with an automatic unless I developed some crippling disease and could not shift OR got too old etc. I mean, why have a vette with an automatic. For me it simply does not compute.
Teach your wife to drive a manual transmission. You and she might both be surprised to learn that she enjoys it more than the auto and it's a good skill to have.
I can't speak for you but only for me. As much as I love the manual trans if I was to get an automatic I'd miss it every moment of driving the car.
well, I'm sure you'll enjoy your vette, but you would have really enjoyed it more if you had ordered a manual. I have nothing against clutchless trannys but I drove this one and well it didn't do anyting for me. Its an automatic, period!! I would have said honey, I'm getting a stick and live with it. I'm sure its not going to be "her" car. I know with my vette, its my car and my wife got the stupid SUV that she had to have so why would I compromise and not enjoy a 60K + car??
It really depends on how much you like to shift. Personally I would never consider an auto in a performance car, but thats me. Autos must have their fans also, otherwise they'd all be manuals.
I have always owned manuals...until our Corvette. My wife learned to drive a manual when we had a Miata and can do so when needed, but she does not particularly enjoy it. Since we use our Vette as a daily driver and we carpool, we both drive it every day. I figured the A6 would be much nicer for her...and I was right. She loves driving the Vette so we both get to enjoy the car.
Do I miss a clutch? A little...but I can always get my fix by jumping on my KTM dirt bike. Do I regret the decision to go with an A6? Not at all...
I have both and I find that the A6 is driven more often due to traffic. The fun ratio is just about the same. I'm going to sell the manual because in the long run, it's not as much fun to drive in the real world of going to work or in stop and go weekend traffic.
Personally, I would not want a C6 with an automatic ...
Its the same for me. I don't see the point of buying a sports car then not shifting for myself. Its not to "prove" I can drive, its just part of the enjoyable experience of commanding the actions of the car. Sometimes I feel like a little piece of me has died when I see that a Corvette has been castrated with a slushbox. Not trying to start any arguements...really...just the way I feel.
As for driving in stop and go traffic; If I knew my trip was going to have more stop and go than otherwise normal flow, I wouldn't bother to drive the Vette. In those situations, I drive my truck, not because it is auto, but because it is not a performance machine and thus my mindset changes to a more relaxed, less spirited state. Driving the Vette in traffic just frustrates me because the opportunities to "sport" around are not there.
