Default pre-trade- would you do it.

ready to get an 08. kerbeck and local dealer claims if i trade my car in at the the initial order date, and use it as a downpayment, they can sell it before the vet market starts to get weak as summer ends, and i get a better trade in price on my old car. one obvious drawback is i am vetless for 2 months(hopefully less)
what do you think. i am reluctant to do this, and would only do it with "good" dealer. advice appreciated. ithanks

How much money are they talking about? Do you have other transportation? I might be inclined to use that time to sell my car privately...you'll likely get more money and you can enjoy it until it sells. IMO the only good thing about trading-in a car is it's convenient...otherwise it's just another profit tool for the dealership.

Dealers have been known to go under. Two months is a long time. Unless they were willing to cut you a check for the trade in amount less a small deposit for the order, I wouldn't do it.

well, there is seasonality in the vette market for sure. However, if you want to get more by selling now you should sell it yourself and use the money as down payment.

The dealer may get more for your car if it sells sooner. However, they will take their margin on the sale. What will be left might be less than you could net if you sell yourself.

I've never heard this one.

makes a lotta economic sense to me. but if being vette-less is that important, than to you, money doesn't count. nothing wrong with that, just recognize it as a fact and go from there. not being critical, just my observation.

It is not by far the first time that I've heard this. Let's face it, Corvettes are for the most part seasonal cars. Especially here in the northeast. Folks in these parts are seldom looking for a Corvette in December. Even if you sold it out right you may end up being Vetteless for a couple of months. If you want the '08 and need the extra that it will bring your best bet is to do it.

no way they want it now so they can make more money on it
it doesnt mean your going to get more. sell it your self. what if the new vette you ordered is not right or if the dealer messes it up be for you take delivery or they want to mark up the price. then your stuck with no new vette no old vette it will be hard to walk away from the deal only way i would do it is if they gave me a check on the spot as if they were buying it out right. but again if you do that just sell it your self you will make a lot more on your car. if you need help selling it just pm me ill be happy to tell you hows the best way to do it.

You will get a different number on trade in after labor day than you would at the beginning of spring or summer!Seasonal is correct! If you live in a seasonal place or do business with a dealer who's in one.Florida and California, arizona might be exempt from that though!

Very common practice around here, especially at this time of year. You can do it or use the time to enjoy the car and advertise it on your own.

Did they tell you what the "better trade" value actually was? My experience in the past was when I ordered an '02 911 Turbo. I was driving a '97 911 C4S and the dealer asked if I wanted to trade it? I didn't care one way or the other but he said they would give me a really good price if I gave it to them right away. He said they really wanted that car. Anyway when it came time for a number they were $10K below what it was worth. I kept the C4S, drove it for a year and still sold it for $8K over their offer.

...and I was pissed off enough by their lowball trade offer that I bought the 911 turbo from another dealer.

Going to do the same thing this week with my 2006, researched trade in values and am getting a figure I consider fair, two months from now the values on 06's will be lower being the market is saturated with new 07's at big discounts. Trade in you also get the tax advantage here , you don't put up with the PITA of selling to private party's and I am getting the new one (Coupe, AO, A6, NPP, 2 tone Cashmere) at invoice, my dealer is well established so no problem with the credit value going away.

I have another car so no problem, I can do a little work on the garage so the new one has a nice home. Plus not having one for 2 months it will be filling a big void and a little more thrilling when getting the 08, instead of 06 one day 08 the next.

I would try to sell it myself for a couple of weeks and then sell it to them. You will get more now, then later. NO DOUBT! Another factor that will impact the price of your car is other people trading late model Vettes in on new 08's thus somewhat saturating the market. Do something fast if you must trade at all.

i have done this twice. the last time was with my 04 about 10 months ago. the only thing that bothered me was the fact that the dealer had my $36k+ for a couple of months. it was a good deal for me as i had tried to sell my car (in august, sept and oct) to no avail. the deal was as good as a private sale because i saved over $2k in sales tax alone. the KEY is the people you are dealing with. i would do it again, no problem. YOU CANNOT DO THIS WITH EVERYONE. kerbeck: i have not personally dealt with BUT they have an untarnished reputation from what i've heard. if it is a good deal for you - do it !IMHO.

In southern Arizona, there is only one season. The endless summer.

Did the same thing with Rick at Les Stanford. Untarnished reputation. My 08 is on order (and on constraint). But they took my trade in at an excellent fair offer. Don't wait till winter, the longer you wait the better chance of KBB or NADA lowering their trade value. I can only go down, it won't go up. Use one of these reputable dealers, Rick is excellent.

When I got my 05 I was Vetteless for about 3 1/2 weeks.

Dealer HAD A ALLOCATION and I knew my new car would be available for NCM pick up in about 7 weeks. (unless the plant blew up or some other real big issue) I ordered it, and of course they wanted my clean 98 vert as it was the beginning of May. WE agreeded to split the time. I had my car for 24 more days and then I went and dropped it off.
I promissed and lived up to the fact that I would not put on more than 500 miles and they would reexamin the car. All went well and a few weeks later I went to NCM to get my 05
