Default C6 Nav Problem

First, I know there is an FAQ with lots of info on the Nav, I read it and didn't find the info I needed. So....

I bought an 07-C6 LT3 without Nav and had the Dealer install the factory Nav.

Two problems. First, the Voice Activation doesn't work at all. Apparently there is no Microphone for it. Second, the HUD doesn't display any Nav info.

The dealer, Bob Stall in San Diego just told me that when the factory Nav gets installed by the dealer the mic doesn't get installed. He said if I had OnStar that would be used, but without OnStar there is no voice activation for the dealer installed Nav.

It is important to know that this IS the factory Nav, not an aftermarket one.

Question: does this sound right? Sounds pretty wrong to me.

Second, is there a setting somewhere in the Nav or the HUD to have the Nav info displayed in the HUD? The dealer said there was a setting, he couldn't remember where, but it was in the Nav user's manaul. I checked in there and the only section on HUD in the Nav manual (page 75) describes what gets displayed and nothing about options.

Question: anyone know where to look for that info?

My guesses are that the dealer "forgot" to put the Mic in for the voice activation and that it should have been installed. He wants more money to do it now. My guess with the HUD is maybe a wire or two didn't get connected correctly during installation.

Any thoughs would be most welcome.

Regarding the mic....DON'T BOTHER this system is infamous for almost NEVER getting voice commands correct...it is an unusable feature. The overall performance of the unit is pretty good but not the voice activation feature. The HUD display feature should work....but it only works with the HUD in the basic street mode....I suspect this to be your problem.

Mine is a Nav without OnStar and it has a mic, not sure where, but Voice commands work.

The Nav will display on the HUD, if you are in HUD-Street Mode and you are using the Nav with Turn-by-Turn directions. The HUD will display the name of the next street with an arrow indicating right or left and a bar graph showing how close you are to the next turn. (Note: You have to be fairly close to the next turn or it displays normal HUD info. It's about 1/2 mile away when it starts displaying Nav info.) I believe if you hit the Reset button it will turn off the HUD Nav display, but the default is always on. Both Track modes of HUD will not display the Nav directions.

Hope that helps.

Make sure that your HUD is in the "Street" mode.

If you have the microphone, it will be on the inside of the driver side "A" pillar about midway.

Did he tell your ECU (or whatever they call the computer now) that your car has Nav? The VIN number tells the computer what your car has as far as options, and your car does not know you have it unless they went in and updated it. The computer must be updated for it to give all the signals out to communicate with the HUD.

I'm not electronics guru, but that is the first thought I have.

Good luck.

you have to press the little button on the upper LHS of the radio/nav screen prior to issueing a voice command...

That's what I suspected was the microphone but was not sure. I do have the mic on the A pillar and I do not have OnStar.

If you pay the dealer to install a nav then the dealer should install the nav which would include a mic high on the driver A pillar. You should not have to get OnStar because they are seperate systems. Contrary to some opinions, I find the voice activation works at least 98% of the time. It seems the biggest problem is people don't read the manual and try talking to it rather than using the commands that it understands.

As others have mentioned, the nav only displays turns on the HUD in street mode and then only right before the turns. If it never works and you're in Street Mode then, again, the dealer did only half the job they were paid to do.

I do not have onstar and my sound works fine. It was installed at the factory. I have the sound turned off because the voice is very irritating.

He was actually referring to voice commands (from the driver or passenger).

I dont have on-star and my mic works just fine. You do have to press the button on the nav first..

I still don't think the nav is all ther good. I have all these pin things on my nav and I cant figure out how to make them go away.

Actually I was also. The factory NAV manual starting on page 4-2 tells all about it.

Default C6 Nav Problem-- more questions

Relative to my problem with the Nav & HUD

I've got the HUD in street mode. And I see all of the things you mention, but on the Nav's MAP not in the HUD.

You mentioned "Turn-by-Turn" directions. I haven't heard of that term. Is there some setting for this, or do you mean that is is "guiding" as opposed to just displaying the map on the Nav?

As far as the Voice feature, with the button pushed nothing happens except the beep and then after a bit of time, another beep and "her" saying she didn't recognize anything.

Relative to the VIN number and how they have to reprogram the computer to detect that the NAV has been installed. Do you know anything more about this? I'm thinking this may be the problem and they may not know about it (or care about it).

Thanks for all the input guys, appreciate it!

Sorry... by "Turn-by-Turn" I meant "Guiding", just couldn't remember the appropriate term. The only thing that shows on HUD is like I described, Street Name an Arrow and Distance Bar.

You have to have a mic installed if you wish to use the voice commands. If the car didn't come with a mic because there was no Nav or Onstar in it, then you will have to add the mic..assuming the wiring is there for it in the left "A" pillar. As others have mentioned, you may very well need a reprogramming of the BCM or whatever to get it to work.

It took me forever to figure out how to get rid of those flags. That is the only Voice command that I know and use.

"POI Off"

The VIN does not tell the car what options you have. As has been explained here many times, the only options coded into the VIN are body style (coupe or vert) and whether the car came with the LS7 engine (Z06 option).
