No...though I could see how it could happen. I have done the following though:

1) Started car
2) Moved it
3) Unlocked doors, and got out to do something (in my driveway)
4) Got back in
5) Drove away
6) Something in my pocket pushes the 'open door' button and the door flys open...thats always fun!

I do not understand how that can happen if the fob is in your pocket where it belongs.
If its in your pocket the car will unlock when you grab the door, you get in and drive away. Even if you get out to do something else for a little bit the FOB SHOULD BE IN YOUR POCKET. Get back in and drive (Fob is in pocket)
If your a person that puts fob on console, the passanger seat or in the trunk for some reason one day you will be writing a another sob story of I locked my fob /key in the car
Its almost impossible to drive away without the fob, but I know some can or will do it

I've read the above. Ok...I'll ask a few perhaps stupid questions:

1. If you drove off without the fob, wouldn't the DIC chime "no fob detected"?
2. If the car is in gear, pushing the door unlock button on the fob won't actually OPEN the door, will it? That's never happened to me.
3. When you stop the car and shut it off and open the door, won't it chime "no fob detected" again?

I can't get more than 10 feet from my car before it starts chiming at me. Is my DIC set differently or something?

You said magic words DIC. Check and see how its configured..
Depending on whats set you can have some interesting results

FWIW you do not to have car running, just push off for about 10 seconds and it goes to what would be called key on but not running in other cars. (if fob present)

What happens if you start the car with the fob in your pocket, then stop the car, get out, drop the fob on the floor, get back in (car is still running), and drive off. This is all possible. True?

Then when you get where you're going, you stop the car, turn off the engine, and get out. When you later try to get back in, you're screwed ..... you lost your fob and no way to get home.

Isn't this scenerio possible? Just curious...

Yes, it's possible. But, like I said, my DIC chimes at me whenever it doesn't sense my fob. I couldn't get more than 15 feet without the car barking at me. Hard to drive off without the fob that way.

Its quite possible, and has happened to quite a few CF members. My favorite is "fob in wife's purse when you drop her off at work... drive off... Ruh roh" LOL

My solution: Keep a spare fob hidden in the car. Take the battery out and tape it to the back of the fob so that the car doesnt detect it and mess up your security. If you ever need it, its there. Pop the battery in, and you're back in business.

You can pick up a used fob on ebay for less than $50. Thats cheap insurance that you'll never be stranded by driving off without your fob, as long as you don't lock yourself out!

Don't count on the car warning you if you drive off without the fob. It's entirely possible you're getting some other type of warning, but not this.

Here's what happens if you drive off without the fob, then stop and turn off the engine. 2005 owner's manual, page 3-58. This message will appear on the DIC, AFTER YOU'VE SHUT THE ENGINE OFF.

NO FOB - OFF OR RUN?: This message is displayed
and a chime will sound when you turn off the engine,
but the vehicle does not detect a keyless access
transmitter in the vehicle. The vehicle will remain in
ACCESSORY until OFF or START has been pressed or
five minutes has expired. If you select OFF, the
vehicle cannot be started again without a keyless access
transmitter in the vehicle.
Keep the fob in your pocket (or ladies, in your purse). It's not rocket science.

My buddy asked me to drive it (after all - he has a maclaren and he let me drive it ) anyway - he went to get some smokes and of course turned off the car. I was not with him, the FOB was in my pocket.

I've had it happen. Got out of the car to let my wife take her Mom home and forgot to give her the fob. She drove off, actually shut the car off when she got to her mom's home. The alert chimed and the read out warned of no fob present; however, she was able to start the car by immediately pushing the starter. Don't ask me how, but the absent fob didn't stop her from starting. Good thing too, else she would have been "slightly" po'ed

for me on longer drives i dont like having that big clunky thing pressed into my hip when im sitting wearing jeans so i remove it often.

Reread post no. 12, above. It gives you about 5 minutes to restart the car without the fob.

Don't carry it in your hip pocket. Jeans have 5 pockets, use one of the other ones.
