you have a right to your opinion, no matter how wrong it may be for others. still, no reason to belittle someone's personal preference. I can drive a manual tranny car as well as I can an auto, I just chose the A6 because 1) it was something new for me, 2)I like to hear all the b.s. complaints from M6 guys at the track as to why an auto just blew them off the strip. and 3) new reason here....just so I can disagree with you.
I know I am going to get flamed like crazy for this, but why would anybody want an automatic in a Corvette? Or any sports car for that matter. I used to live in Ft.lauderdale and drove in Miami all of the time. I was in rush hour traffic, and having a manual didnt bother me one bit.
Um... Miami isn't what I'd consider rush hour.. Come on up north, I'll show you rush hour..
Have you ever driven in Miami rush hour traffic? Try driving north out of downtown on I-95 at 5 pm. 6 north bound lanes, bumper to bumper. And I have been up north, and there are no 12 lane expressways(6 in each direction) anywhere.
hey guys I'm still trying to decide to go with an a6 08 2.73 or a m6 its supposed to be better but I was reading a review that the guy said it didnt seem any faster than the 06 paddles. has anyone been to the track yet and put the car in SHift but do not use paddles becasue this is the way id prob drive around 90% of the time in shift sport mode and see how fast its going 0-60 i know motortrend is claiming 4.3 but will it actually pull that consistent in sport mode fully auto? thanx guys this will prob make my decision easier I still want the manual but if the auto is faster most of the time it might sway me im a avg to beginner manual driver also..
No one in their right mind would track an A6 with it in Sports mode and not use the paddle shifters to select the proper gear. You are asking for a instant compression skid or complete lag and being rear ended by the car behind you that knew how to shift properly.
Example to prove the point: 1200 foot straight leading into a 180 degree hairpin with a 180 foot radius. Lets say you do a standing start to do a high speed run. You will be between 85 and 90 when you have to hit the brakes and get ready for your turn in. At this point the car is now shifting from 3rd into 6th because you have let off the gas. Your RPM drops dramatically and your rear gets lite. When you get down to about 40 MPH the Sports mode will continue to have you in 6th gear. Because it doesn't down shift to 5th till 38 MPH. Now, you start the apex properly and hit the gas. Computer sees two conditions the wrong gear and you are in a turn. You are going to be roughly at 1300 RPM. If you pour the power on quickly, the car is going to down shift from 6th to 2nd gear and snap the rear around on you. If you do it lightly it will only shift down to 4th and you will be going a heck of alot slower than the MN6 driver right behind you that was in either first or second.
Now to answer you question. Leaving it in Sports mode for daily driving is no different than having it in Drive. Save for the computer down shifting quicker when you get on the gas and staying in a gear longer durning acceleration.
I dont get it. you guys make driving a 6speed manual sound like its some chore or something. There is hardly and weight to the clutch at all. Its not like you are driving a 1965 Ford F-600.
For the drag racers, and there are a few of us, as soon as one of the major converter manufacturers come out with a loose converter for the A6 the M6 guys are going to be reading license plates at the drags. The manuals will be 1/2+ second slower. A properly sized converter will add .6-.7 et improvement.
You may as well get what suits the type of driving you do most. It's close enough that the better driver will win, no matter which trans you get. If you want to be SURE you'll win, get a sportbike.
Ironically, there's a whole slew of manual Corvette owners out there who would sooner die than own a Vette without EVERY FREAKIN' 'WEIGHT ADDING' LUXURY ACCOUTREMENT AVAILABLE on that options list, if they could add a toilet and a fridge I'm thinking they'd have that too LOL.
The thought of a lower optioned sports car is alien to many manual drivers yet it isn't to this particular automatic guy.
Just a thought.
