Am I the only one who pre-fills the oil filter to avoid the .5 sec. of oil starvation at startup?
I've been doing it that way for years on all our cars - even the ones where it mounts sideways.
I also always prefilled the oil filter before installation. It's like what is the worst that happens maybe some oil spills a little but the gain is reduced time getting oil to the bearings.
I only fill the filter if its a vertical sitting filter... I've tried it before on a horizontal sitting filter... and lets just say my arm was oiled up for the next 3000 miles. But like you said before... it can't hurt, and if you've ever seen bearings without any oil... well.... I'd go with the safe side and fill up the oil filter.
Some say it's totally unnecessary, but it's just so quick and easy to do... especially on the LS2 where the filter goes on right side up... may as well just do it.... zero cost... why not?

It ensures that oil will flow to wherever it goes that much sooner.
Before I even start lifting the car or pulling tools, I fill the new filter and let it sit while I am draining the old oil. By the time it's time to install the new filter it needs to be topped off before installation.
Always have since my father showed me how to do it on our tractor when I was 12 years old - - it worked for that and been a good idea ever since for any vertical filter.
I always run a finger full of oil all around the gasket too - - no downside to either in my view.

Actually that's what I also do when working on a car with a horizontal filter - minus the top up. By the time I'm ready to install it the filter media has absorbed enough that I can hold it horizontally and oil will not spill (though you may have to rotate it slowly).

Yes, there is a downside - you will be able to remove it
