It is not recommended that you simply pull the shifter from D to S while the car is moving. I know you can have it in S and tap the paddles to activate them while the car is moving, but moving the shifter itself - I wouldn't do it personally.
I know this is kind of a noob question so please bare with me.
When I test drove an 07 corvette the salesperson I was with made me pull over before I could switch it into S to use the Paddle shifters.
I just ordered an 08 and was wondering, can you shift back and forth from S to D? or do you have to pull over every single time?
No.
From the 2007 Owner's Manual:
"To use the system, shift from PARK (P) position to
SPORT MODE (S) while stopped and with the
engine running, or from DRIVE (D) with the vehicle
moving."

Maybe that explains why my transmission fell out of the car last week.
Did I miss something in the manual? If I had to stop to change from D to S and back to D, it would certainly take a lot of fun out of driving. I do it all the time and no problems yet.

I do it all the time and sometimes S to D and right back to S. I like the shifting of S and sometimes I like the paddles. But when I get into town I don't want to have to mess with paddles so a quick S-D-S and you're back to "automatic" S.
Edit: Oops. I forgot to "bare" with you.

Do it as much as you like - I do it all the time at all speeds - no problem, just enjoy!
Where do these people come up with such idiotic statements that you have to be stopped to shift from S to D or D to S? Can you imagine if that were true? There would be broken Vettes on every corner!

under no circumstances would i buy a vette from that dealer. go back and tell that guy to go back to selling copiers. thats the whole idea to having the two settings to be able to go back and forth depending on your driving conditions.
I haven't even tried the paddle shift yet!
Do you just shift to S and the car becomes manual transmission?
Yes you just put the lever into 'S' and tap either one of the paddles to activate them but no the car does NOT become a manual all of a sudden.
It's still an automatic but it now gives you the ability to control it's shifts better.

The S mode is still automatic, but allows you the "option" of using the paddles. I drive mine in S just about all of the time, but don't use the paddles that often. If you bump one of the paddles while making a turn, etc. you are in the "shifting" mode. When this happens I just shift to D then back to S. Only 5,000 miles but the tranny hasn't fallen out yet.
In "S" after you have activated the paddles, the only way to "unactivate" the paddles is by shifting back to "D". If you had to stop, this would be very idiotic on GM's design process.
I doubt if any engineer would keep his job long designing a system that would require this.
