I was just reading my owner's manuel regarding driving in the Competitive Mode. Of course the book is a bit vague and uses other words for burnouts, etc. Is it saying that this the mode to use to allow a burnout without getting sideways? I'm in an A6.

Yes, it's very vague about what Comp mode is!!
One push of the button turns off the Traction Control System, and like the book says, the system will not limit wheel spin. Active Handling is still ON.
Pushing the button 2 times within 5 seconds puts you in Comp mode. Traction Control is OFF, and the AH system lets the car get a little farther out before it starts doing its thing - so AH is still ON, but it's not so intrusive.
Pushing the button down for more than 5 seconds turns everything OFF - AH and Traction Control will be OFF.

with the others above; on the track at Spring Mountain, I forgot to put it in competitive mode and the AH and anti-lock brakes kept going off because of the hard driving. Once I put it in comp mode I could drive hard with confidence and the system would not intervene until I blew a turn and it kicked in to save my butt. The system always resets back to TC and AH on when you power down. I turn everything off for the few burnouts I do per year ($400 tires dampen your desire to do it daily); but comp mode may work as well... donuts are best with all off .
I always leave TC/AH on for daily driving, and I was in a recent rainstrorm when the car hydroplaned (a rare event). The system and Spring Mountain are responsible for preventing me from heading toward the ditch or worse.
