Default Hot Trans

Just got a new 05 with a 6 speed trans. The trunk and the console compartment get pretty hot after an hour or so of driving. Also, the floor gets hot as well. There is not gauge for trans. temp on the stick - auto has trans. fluid temp. gauge. Anyone know if this is normal?

I know I have asked a lot of simple questions today but this is my first Vet and I have no more questions after this one. Thanks for your indulgence.

There is a lot of heat generated in the drivetrain, and it easily enters the car through a thin floor. Sort of a Corvette tradition..... Many people wind up installing insulation, for both sound and heat.

I think it is Crazy Cowboy who has an insulation kit that he show pics of on this site. He is usually on the first or second page of the forum. The heat is worse in some cars than others, but I haven't seen a good explaination for that. My 05 is warm in the console area, but not really a problem.

For some reason the heat has dissipated with time however it is still on the warm/hot side. Not a good place to store your candy bars!

It's normal for your transmission, engine, etc. to get hot when you drive and both external and internal factors determine just how hot your 'car' gets. I live in Tucson, Arizona so I have quite a bit of external heat to deal with.

I certainly have heat emanating from the console area of my 2005 MN6 but I haven't found it to be excessive or uncomfortable.

Besides complete interior insulating kits, many C6 owners install an after-market tunnel plate. This serves a dual purpose of reducing heat emanating into the console area as well as providing increased rigidity to your chassis. I went with the Elite Engineering tunnel plate. You can find some excellent information on their web site.

Certainly check to make sure all fluids are good and everything is in proper operating condition. Just because it feels warm isn’t necessarily indicative of any problem.

Console heat has nothing to do with the transmission, which is in the rear in any event. The heat comes mainly from the cats and the mid-pipes which pass through that area. When in motion, some of the heat also comes from hot engine compartment air being ducted through the tunnel area.

The MN6 does have a temp sensor but does not register on the DIC unless the transmission over heats. Somewhere around 300 degrees.
