I used my car 2 days ago but tonight when I tried to start it it had a dead battery. It is an A6 not manual. I noticed I didn't have it in park although the parking brake was set. Would this wear the bat down. I had a hard time jumping it but it finally came to life. The top would not go down (with the motor running) for about 20 minutes. The bat is showing 13.8 volts now. Any ideas on what happened?
Thanks

If it wasn't in PARK, it was in Accessory Mode, which means any live circuits would stay alive for 20 minutes, then go into RAP or OFF, depending on whether the doors were opened or closed. Owner's manual's not too clear.
RAP = Retained Accessory Power. It's the system that SHOULD have shut down the accessories after 20 minutes.
The RAP timer should shut off accessories (primarily the radio), but he didn't have the car in Park, so the computers never shut off. That's what pulled his battery down. Automatics must be in Park when shut down to cause the computers to go into low power sleep mode. If you don't shut off in Park, the computers will continue to draw 2 to 3 amps until the battery is dead.

By not putting the car in park you never let it know that you were done using it. If you don't put it in park the computers will stay awake pending the next input from the owner. That is exactly what killed your battery. It is a very bad idea as a general rule to not park an automatic in park.

Always park, in PARK. Get a Battery Tender, use it when the car is going to sit for more than a day or two, and you will have no further problems with the battery.
What should the batt voltage read inside the car, im having a similar problem and now my battery reads like 13.6 -13.7 and sometimes drops and goes back up again?
If your engine is running, the volt meter is only showing you the voltage of your charging system since the alternator is providing power to the system. To check the battery voltage, shut down the engine and hold down the bottom of the start switch to put it in accessory mode, then check the voltmeter.
Thanks guys. I promise never to leave it unless it is in park. The car has started up every time now but I,ve got to check why the rear view mirrors always go to the ground now, Every thing else works fine. Thanks again for all your advice

If you have 3LT and subsequently memory, the sideview mirror location (I think that is what you mean) is part of the memory settings. Just get the mirrors where you want them and press and hold the memory button (either 1 or 2 to correspond with which fob you are using to set them and you should be good to go the next time you get in the car.
