Orange peel problem
I can live with that given the price of the car and the fact that I love vettes.
BBBB......UUUUU......TTTTTTTTT.......... ......
Since I am in the market for a 2008 ZO6 I have been looking at dealer cars for several months. Sorry to say BUT what I have been seeing lately as far as paint jobs goes has been REALLY UNACCEPTABLE.
For example I looked at three ZO6's yesterday. A 2008 silver ZO6 with orange peel so BAD on the hood that I would not even take the car if it was FREE.....usually orange peel is most obvious on the sides.....but this car had a serious orange peel problem on the hood and the rest of the car. Usually silver is a hard color to see the orange peel....but not on this poorly painted Z...I pitty the sucker who buys this one.
Then I looked at a Jetstream Blue ZO6 and the orange peel was also above average average......I should in all fairness note that I saw two JSB ZO6's about 2 months ago that had little orange peel.....in fact the paint job was outstanding.
Black tends to shows the most orange peel......but what I found on a black 2007 ZO6 yesterday was ABSOLUTELY the WORSE paint job I have ever seen......on the inside of the driver's side door the entire ledge above the chrome door sill was a solid line of PAINT DRIPS.......maybe 75 paint drips lined up one after another along the entire area above the door sill........I could NOT BELIEVE MY EYES
....wish I had my camera to show on this forum. And to make matters worse the 2 previous 2007 Black ZO6's that I looked at also had BIG paint flaws.....one had a "fish eye"
on the hood....and another had a big scrap across the hood (could have been done at the dealer)........also have seen 3 black 2007 ZO6's each with paint drips below the front of the door hinge on the drivers side. Also been noticing that ALL the black cars I have seen (barring none) have numerous scratches on the top of the rear bumper above the rear tail lights just rear of where the glass top closes on either side. I have yet to see a new black vette without these scratches. I do NOT know where these originate from....BG or dealer?????
It is the responsibility of the dealer to caught these sort of defects BUT on the cars I saw above it seems as if they have been remiss.
Take home message is......BEFORE you buy take the time to CAREFULLY LOOK the car over on the showroom with flourescent lighting at every angle you can and take a few extra minutes to look along the door sills, inside the gas door, and other areas to prevent any unwanted surprises.
Just sharing some of my advice and 2 cents worth.
Don't get me wrong the C6 ZO6 is still an awesome car.....

To steveorz, good luck in finding any modern production car without orange peel, Corvette or otherwise. As has been discussed in detail on the forum it is a by product of the paint, the process and the materials in use today combined with the costs associated with painting and environmental remediation. While of course cost is a factor it is not the only factor.
At the end of the day despite it's cost, the Z06 is a C6. It is subject to the same paint and paint process in the plant that the non-Z cars are using the same materials and robots on the same type of panel materials (with the notable exception of the carbon fiber front fenders). My point is that if you look closely enough at any C5, C6 Corvette you will find orange peel and I defy anyone to show me one otherwise that has not been wetsanded or repainted. While certain colors show more or less than others, they all have it. Understanding the process and its limitations leaves me with this opinion.

If it really bothers you, wet sand the back only, mask off the top, and have someone spray alittle clear over it.
If it's me, I'd leave it.
Regards to all of you and for those who gave me some deserved jabs, its okay with me I can take it and I deserved it.
