50 years from now that filler cover will be worth a bundle for somebody restoring an 08. " remember back in the day when the inside of the fuel door was all orange peel?" well I have one.

the paint would never match and you would be even more unhappy.

You say it on the inside of the filler door? So why care...if you get another filler cap you run the chance of the door not matching the panel.....if you cant see it then why worry about it...you are looking for trouble and may wind up more unhappy with a nicely painted mis-matched fuel door.

Default Bad paint jobs on NEW ZO6's.....whats up????

Although orange peel on C5's and C6's is the NORM that unfortunately we have to live with I agree with many of the post here.
I can live with that given the price of the car and the fact that I love vettes.

BBBB......UUUUU......TTTTTTTTT.......... ......

Since I am in the market for a 2008 ZO6 I have been looking at dealer cars for several months. Sorry to say BUT what I have been seeing lately as far as paint jobs goes has been REALLY UNACCEPTABLE.

For example I looked at three ZO6's yesterday. A 2008 silver ZO6 with orange peel so BAD on the hood that I would not even take the car if it was FREE.....usually orange peel is most obvious on the sides.....but this car had a serious orange peel problem on the hood and the rest of the car. Usually silver is a hard color to see the orange peel....but not on this poorly painted Z...I pitty the sucker who buys this one.

Then I looked at a Jetstream Blue ZO6 and the orange peel was also above average average......I should in all fairness note that I saw two JSB ZO6's about 2 months ago that had little orange peel.....in fact the paint job was outstanding.

Black tends to shows the most orange peel......but what I found on a black 2007 ZO6 yesterday was ABSOLUTELY the WORSE paint job I have ever seen......on the inside of the driver's side door the entire ledge above the chrome door sill was a solid line of PAINT DRIPS.......maybe 75 paint drips lined up one after another along the entire area above the door sill........I could NOT BELIEVE MY EYES ....wish I had my camera to show on this forum. And to make matters worse the 2 previous 2007 Black ZO6's that I looked at also had BIG paint flaws.....one had a "fish eye" on the hood....and another had a big scrap across the hood (could have been done at the dealer)........also have seen 3 black 2007 ZO6's each with paint drips below the front of the door hinge on the drivers side.

Also been noticing that ALL the black cars I have seen (barring none) have numerous scratches on the top of the rear bumper above the rear tail lights just rear of where the glass top closes on either side. I have yet to see a new black vette without these scratches. I do NOT know where these originate from....BG or dealer?????

It is the responsibility of the dealer to caught these sort of defects BUT on the cars I saw above it seems as if they have been remiss.

Take home message is......BEFORE you buy take the time to CAREFULLY LOOK the car over on the showroom with flourescent lighting at every angle you can and take a few extra minutes to look along the door sills, inside the gas door, and other areas to prevent any unwanted surprises.

Just sharing some of my advice and 2 cents worth. Don't get me wrong the C6 ZO6 is still an awesome car.....

To the original poster, I believe if you look more closely at your fuel door cover what I suspect you will find is that it is not orange peel, but unpolished texture from the bottom plate of the mold that made the part. That is at least the case with my fuel door.

To steveorz, good luck in finding any modern production car without orange peel, Corvette or otherwise. As has been discussed in detail on the forum it is a by product of the paint, the process and the materials in use today combined with the costs associated with painting and environmental remediation. While of course cost is a factor it is not the only factor.

At the end of the day despite it's cost, the Z06 is a C6. It is subject to the same paint and paint process in the plant that the non-Z cars are using the same materials and robots on the same type of panel materials (with the notable exception of the carbon fiber front fenders). My point is that if you look closely enough at any C5, C6 Corvette you will find orange peel and I defy anyone to show me one otherwise that has not been wetsanded or repainted. While certain colors show more or less than others, they all have it. Understanding the process and its limitations leaves me with this opinion.

Sorry. I had to say it.

It sucks but you're right. What is the cause of this anyways? I thought I'd get away from this problem when I got rid of my cobra but all the c6s i've seen have it too.

If it's the back side, It's most likely over spray from the topside. Todays paints are sprayed electrostatically. The paint will wrap around a part because of the electrical charge. The paint particle travels further to these area and tends to dry out more, thus it does not flow out as well.

If it really bothers you, wet sand the back only, mask off the top, and have someone spray alittle clear over it.

If it's me, I'd leave it.

Okay, now that everyone has torn me apart I will now officially apologize for mentioning the orange peel on the inside of the filler flap door. Perhaps it was a senior moment and I will have no memory of this complaint by tomorrow. However, I must say that I particularly liked the reply regarding banana peel. You people have a good sense of humor, maybe that's why I enjoy the CF so much while learning things about my corvette that I would never have known. Now if I could only remember after reading the owner's manual 10 times, how to properly operate the navigation unit, navigation unit, I would be a happy man.
Regards to all of you and for those who gave me some deserved jabs, its okay with me I can take it and I deserved it.

When you reach my age it easy to forget.......anything, so the gas filler cap has been erased from my memory.

Enjoy reading CF because of the many comments made, some humorous and some not. It doesn't matter. It is all in good spirit. Thanks to all for their comments. Again sorry, senior moment.

Default Fuel Door

I wish the only flaw I was worried about was the "INSIDE" of my fuel door........Dont ever buy a black car you will see every flaw..on the outside of the car where you can see it...
