Default Hp Wars

All cars in america and across the world are marketed today whether it be a suv, pickup ,or sports car by quoting hp , 0 to 60 ,1/4mi times and top speed and 90% will never go to a track or strip so, what was your reason to by a 400 or 500hp vette ?

It's like sex, if you don't understand, no explanation will suffice; if you understand, no explanation is necessary.

1. Because I've liked Vettes since I bought my first one at the age of 25 in 1967.
2. Because a Vette wasn't really practical for several reasons during most of the time I was working.
3. Because I looked forward to buying a NEW vette for the last 4-5 years before I retired.
4. Because now I'm retired.

The 400 hp really had little to do with it.

When I bought my last Suburban I don't recall GM mentioning 0-60 , 1/4mile times or top speed. I vaguely remember some mention of torque and horsepower....I definitely remember engine size (496 cubic inches) being quoted....size does matter.

Although I believe the qualities of the C6 are well-known, I bought mine for its performance and styling.

I would guess the percentage of Corvette owners that 'track' their cars is far less than 10%. FWIW I do run my car in road course events.

Just because you don't go to the track and get a time slip does not imply that you will never floor it and feel the acceleration. There is a feeling that the power gives you that you have to experience first hand.

Then again, I do go to the track.

Well said!

Why did I buy one?

1. Because I do go to the track
2. Because the C6 is damn sexy
3. Because the C6 is the best supercar (yes, it is a supercar by every definition except price), expecially for the money
4. Because it can be repaired at my local dealership
5. Because I happen to love it.

For me it's a real kick just knowing the power is there, controlled, ready, and at my command. The 400 or more hp can be easily felt even with normal acceleration in traffic. You know it's there. The torque curve can be felt if you know your car...it doesn't require WOT or near to it. The heart of the beast is known to it's master even when it is behaving quietly.

It's also fun to punch it occasionally when conditions are safe. But that feeling of caged controlled power is intoxicating to me.

Power in a car is a great deal of the personality of the car. Put a 200 hp V6 in a C6 and you'd have an entirely different persona. It would be a nice car and probably faster than what passed for a Corvette in the late 70s to mid 80s. It would handle great and turn heads whereever it went. And...you could remove the mufflers like on a little tricked out Honda for noise.

But it would feel like an entirely different animal. I've experienced this first hand with old 60s era Camaros, Chevelles, and Novas. With a big block in front these cars have attitude and authority. With a little two barrel small block they feel like a limp handshake-the power makes them entirely different cars.

Kinda difficult to put into words but those who experience the same thing will recognize it right away.

The number of horses was not a major influencing factor for me. It's the entire car all together. I love everything about the C6, especially the sex appeal.

Default No Choice . . .

I bought a 400 HP Corvette because that was the only rating available in a 2006 convertible.
