Yesterday morning on the way to work my nav. screen did not display the crossed flags and Corvette script. I turned on the radio and it worked but the display remained dark. The radio stations did display on the HUD and I could change stations by pushing on the touch screen even though the screen was still dark. Pushing the nav. hard button and power cycling the radio had no effect; the screen remained completely dark.
When I got to work, I killed the ignition and restarted the car. Upon restart, the display was working again. On the way home and on two short trips that evening, the display continued to work properly.
If I take it to the dealer, they will not be able to do anything as the display is currently working properly. Since I plan to keep the car for many years, I would like to increase my odds that the screen will not fail outside warranty. Has anyone else experienced similar problems with their navigation display? Should I take the car to a dealer to at least document the problem?
Any information or suggestions would be appreciated.
You have a long time before your warranty is up, I would wait and see if it does it again. I think we all have had a few bugs that only show up one or two times. It must be all the electronics.
There is an option, I believe, to turn off the display. Perhaps that got activated some how.
This may be true .
Please consider those LCD display systems equipped with touch pad , the touch screen section is a separate layer overlaying on the display screen . Therefore the problem which occured means that it had something to do with the display screen or possibly the backlight.
That is why your touch pad was still functional. Unfortunately despite the good quality of the LCD display screen used in stock Nav systems , but there are still number of things which can go wrong. Most LCD screens make their contact with the display driver circuit , using a fine rubber like connector , and if you see a flat paper like cable connector from the board to the display that is in fact the driver circuit connected to the main board and not the actual screen. The connection in between the screen and the driver circuit can be effected by vibration , heat , cold and excessive force applied to the touch screen and it can even leave a permanent internal stain or damage . In this case it could be the backlight only , next time if it happens , try first cleaning the screen with an eye glass cleaning cloth and once the grease stains are cleaned , hold a flashlight at 45 degree angle. If you see the shade of the contents being displayed that means the unit is operating and only backlight is out , however if you see no shade of any content (changing) in that case the unit is taking a day off. I hope this helps . Good luck
my wife has an '07 Acura RDX w/nav and if you do not hit the agree/ok button the screen will go blank within a few seconds...Don't know if my '08 vette works the same way...I suppose it is possible that if you do not hit the agree button within a period of time that the screen will go blank...will try not hitting the agree button tomorrow and see what happens...
Thanks for the insight guys. Here are a few more details...
The screen was not turned off nor was it a case of not hitting the 'I Agree' button. If the system is off when the car is started, the screen should show the crossed flags logo. The 'I Agree' soft button does not appear until the navigation functions are activated. Also, the display should display soft buttons for radio stations when the source hard button is pressed. As mentioned above, the screen was completely dark.
Candlemuse has a good suggestion. I wondered if it was simply the backlight not activating or the display not functioning at all. Since it was dark when I left for work and I did not have a flashlight handy, I could not tell if the display was functioning without a backlight or not displaying at all. If the display fails again, I will try to ascertain if it is a backlight issue or something more.
It seems the 'Microsoft Fix' (reboot) is alive and well. A few months ago my cruise control failed to operate. After a couple of power cycles, the cruise resumed normal operation and has yet to fail again. (I have an A6, so I know it is not the clutch spring or clutch sensor that caused the problem.)
If anything else develops, I will update this thread. Thanks for the replies!
How do you keep the nav from coming on - or turn it off ? I can't find how to that in the manual but I must be overlooking it. With my radio off or on, the flag screen disappears after a short time and the agree screen appears. Thanks!

Assuming you are not currently using the nav, simply power down the radio and the screen will return to the crossed flags screen.
The display can be commanded off via the internal diagnostics, but I don't know what would happen after you shut it down and restarted. You might not be able to remember the exact locations of the buttons to command it back on again and then you're stuck. The diagnostics were designed for a Tech with a special scan-tool type device.
I got it!!!! The problem was that I was trying to turn the nav off while it was displayed. You have to change the source to radio, then push the button and then the screen goes to the flags. Little things make me so happy! This somewhat offsets the chipped windshield I got today with 1000 miles on the car -&*(_%%@^*&()_*^%! Thanks to all.
Mine has rebooted several times while I was driving. This week while I was driving to work the nav went blank and the stereo went silent. The nav later displayed the flags and Corvette logo but it didn't complete the power on sequence. When I got to work I shut down the engine and started it again. The nav still showed the flags and Corvette only. I made an appointment to take it in. When I started it up to drive home it started working again so I cancelled the appointment. I had taken it in once for troubleshooting but no problem could be found.
I believe the Nav system keeps track of internal errors as I have seen a log list area in the diagnostics for just such a purpose. What may not be seen to the user as anything not showing up, may have already been logged in the system therefore a trip to the dealer might be a good idea.
Mine does it regularly but only if the car remains unused for a 10 days or more. Once I start it and then stop it and wait an hour it will work again.
I agree with you about the long term effects. Having had a similar problem that I fixed on a laptop it is the inverter that powers the backlight that is failing.
