Gene,
Is the programming procedure different for the '08 fobs vs. the previous years? I want to make sure this dealer knows the diff if there is one?
I shipped several this week to other dealers.

I don't believe the programming procedure is different at all. You can view the procedure(s) by downloading the owners manuals on the front page of my site.

OK, I'm having programming problems and don't know what to do. I absolutely cannot risk not having a working fob as we're three days from moving cross country. I also hate risking the move with one fob!

So here's the problem. I got a new fob that is number two. When I follow the programming instructions for an additional fob, it wants number 3 and never programs the fob.

Do I have to do the 'program them all'? Is there a risk since my fob 1 was already programmed?

What to do, what to do.

Once you reach that point (you should have heard a beep if #2 was recognized) all you need to do is hit the ACC button (the bottom half of the start button) and it should end the programming cycle.

1. The vehicle must be off.
2. Have the recognized and new, unrecognized
transmitters on your person.
3. Go to the rear of the vehicle and insert the vehicle
key into the key cylinder located above the license
plate. See Hatch on page 2-14 for more information
on the key cylinder.
4. Open the trunk.
5. Turn the key five times within five seconds.
6. The DIC will display READY FOR FOB #X, where
X can be 2, 3 or 4.
7. Place the new, unrecognized transmitter in the
glove box transmitter pocket with the buttons
facing towards the passenger’s side.
8. Once the transmitter is programmed, a beep will
sound. The DIC will display READY FOR #X, where
X can be 3 or 4, or MAXIMUM NUMBER OF FOBS
LEARNED.
9. Press the Acc. button (ignition switch).

You may have only received one FOB with the car, but it's my guess two (2) FOB were actually programmed, that's why it's asking for #3 FOB. I would go ahead and let it recoginize your new FOB as #3.

Wow, thanks for catching this. I mis-read what he was saying. If the first thing you see is it asking for fob #3 then Al is absolutely correct. You need to find out what happened to your other fob.

If you your fob is a #2 however, you may have a problem. The car will program fob #'s 1 and 3 as 1 and #'s 2 and 4 as 2. I'm not sure what happens if you try to put a #2 fob in the #3 position.

The problem is that it never beeps! It refuses to program it as number 2 and I'd LIKE it to be number 2 because you can do settings for 2 but not for 3.

I know there used to be a 2, but surely there is a way to get a new 2!

I am going through a simmilar issue. My #1 fob broke. The dealer got me a new fob...but, they programmed it as #3. There are two problems with that. First, FOb #1, which I no longer have, is still programmed for my car. The second issue is that Fob #3 & 4 can not be tied into the memmory, so you can't set your personal options.

I tried the instructions listed earlier in the post....but, because they already programmed my new fob to be #3, the system will only let me add a new fob...not erase them all and reprogram. I called GM last night and they told me that the only way to resolve the issue, in my case, is to use a dealer scan tool...So, it looks like I am stuck going back to the dealer.

You are in the same boat as Charley. You will need to take it to your dealer to have them remove the associated fobs and start over. You can't erase a fob and you don't have the choice of where to assign it. It will simply let the owner add two additional fobs. Only the dealer can delete a fob.

OK, I appear to be COMPLETELY screwed.

I did the complete reprogram, thinking I could redo number 1 and add number 2. followed the 30 minute long count down.

Finally it got to insert Fob 1.

Did that.

Nothing. No change in the message. Nothing. After 5-10 minutes, the display went dark and I have NO WORKING FOBS.

I'm trying again, but I have a car stuck in the garage without a working FOB!!!!

Any suggestions?

So I have to flatbed the car to the dealer????

I'm going to try to program the new fob 2 as fob 1. At least then I'll have a working fob.

I'll wait until we move to fix the other fob. The dealer is worthless.

I thought I'd go through the process again and give it the new fob 2 as fob 1.

That SHOULD work, right?

It doesn't. I am so screwed and the car is supposed to go on the moving van in two days.

Dealer to the rescue. Since the problem was caused by their losing the Fob 2, they jumped right on this and sent a tech to my house with the tool. No charge.

Yes, Bill Heard

Compliments to the dealership.
