Default 08 Keyfob problem

My 08 only came with one keyfob. I've been fighting the dealer on this and they finally said -- no problem, come in and we'll program another one.

Turns out they didn't have one, so they were going to pull one from a new 08 and program it and then order that car a replacement.

The service people said that can't be done as it is permanently tied to the car and would 'blow up my ECU'.

Sounds like to me. Anyone know for sure?

Then I called another dealer and they claim there are ZERO in the nationwide parts system. Can anyone confirm that? Of course my dealer promises just a couple days.

It's only been two months.

Buy one from Gene at GMpartshouse.com then walk the receipt in and have them cut you a check. You can program it yourself, it's easy...

They can reprogram the one they have from another 08 C6 for your car.

How do you reprogram it yourself?? I thought that only the dealer could do it on a C6.

I have an 07 so my fob is a little different but you can always reprogram a new fob for the C6; procedures are described in the owners manual.

The owner's manual lists 2 different procedures. One is to program fob numbers 2 - N, where you already have a good fob #1. That's the one the OP wants.

The other procedure reprograms all numbers from #1 through N, and effectively wipes out all previous fobs that would have worked with that car.

Note that N may be any number from 2 to 4.

How does the manual say to do it? My '08 manual says that you have to take to the dealer...which Iwould rather not do.

1.) The vehicle must be OFF.
2.) Have the recognized and new, unrecognized transmitters on you.
3.) Go to the rear of the vehicle and insert the vehicle key into the the key cylinder, located above the license plate.
4.) Open the truck.
5.) Turn the key five times within five seconds
6.) The DIC will display READY FOR FOB #X, where X can be 2,3 or 4.
7.) Place the new, unrecognized FOB in the glove box FOB pocket with the buttons facing toward the passenger's side.
8.)Once the FOB is programmed, a beep will sound. The DIC will display READY FOR #X, where X can be 3 or 4, or MAXIMUM NUMBER OF FOBS LEARNED.
9.) Press the Acc. button.

If you have a good fob #1 and want to program additional fob(s), use the following procedure found on pages 2-6 and 2-7 of the 2008 owner's manual.

To match a new transmitter to your vehicle when you
have a recognized transmitter (two recognized
transmitters are required for Canadian owners):
1. The vehicle must be off.
2. Have the recognized and new, unrecognized
transmitters on your person.
3. Go to the rear of the vehicle and insert the vehicle
key into the key cylinder located above the license
plate. See Hatch on page 2-14 for more information
on the key cylinder.
4. Open the trunk.
5. Turn the key five times within five seconds.
6. The DIC will display READY FOR FOB #X, where
X can be 2, 3 or 4.
7. Place the new, unrecognized transmitter in the
glove box transmitter pocket with the buttons
facing towards the passenger’s side.
8. Once the transmitter is programmed, a beep will
sound. The DIC will display READY FOR #X, where
X can be 3 or 4, or MAXIMUM NUMBER OF FOBS
LEARNED.
9. Press the Acc. button (ignition switch).
If you do not have any good fobs, you would use this procedure found on pages 2-7 and 2-8 of the 2008 owner's manual. Note that there are diagrams in the manual for both procedures.

1. The vehicle must be off.
2. Place the new, unrecognized transmitter in the
glove box transmitter pocket with the buttons
facing towards the passenger side.
3. Go to the rear of the vehicle and insert the vehicle
key into the key cylinder located above the license
plate. See Hatch on page 2-14 for more information
on the key cylinder.
4. Open the trunk.
5. Turn the key five times within five seconds.
6. The DIC message will display OFF-ACCESSORY
TO LEARN.
7. Press the Acc. button (ignition switch).
8. The DIC will read WAIT 10 MINUTES and will
count down to zero, one minute at a time.
9. The DIC will display OFF-ACCESSORY TO LEARN
again.
10. Press the Acc. button (ignition switch).
11. The DIC will read WAIT 10 MINUTES and will
count down to zero, one minute at a time.
12. The DIC will display OFF-ACCESSORY TO LEARN
again.
13. Press the Acc. button (ignition switch).
14. The DIC will read WAIT 10 MINUTES and will
count down to zero, one minute at a time.
15. A beep will sound and the DIC will read READY
FOR FOB #1. At this time, all previously known
transmitters have been erased.
16. Once the transmitter is recognized and
programmed, a beep will sound and the DIC will
display READY FOR FOB #2.
If you have additional transmitters to program, take
transmitter 1 out of the transmitter pocket and place
transmitter 2 in the pocket. This can be done repeatedly
until up to four transmitters have be programmed.
The DIC will then display MAXIMUM NUMBER OF
FOBS LEARNED and will exit the programming mode.
When you are done programming transmitters, press
the Acc. button (ignition switch).

It certainly won't hurt to use another one from another vehicle. It won't hurt either vehicle, lol.

As far as the FOB's... GM is out of stock and any dealer who orders them and puts an emergency order on it gets them shipped from me

Well thanks for sending one to Robbins Chevy in Humble, TX

They ordered my replacement fob 3 mos ago. They now have it and I'll take the car to them next week for programming.

Gene,
Is the programming procedure different for the '08 fobs vs. the previous years? I want to make sure this dealer knows the diff if there is one?

Go to the dealer in another car and ask to test drive a new C6. After you complete the test drive, keep the FOB in your pocket, return home and reprogram it. If the dealer calls you and wants the FOB back, just tell him that you picked up the one that he shorted you. You can play his silly games also.
