Default Windshield Replacement

I'm wondering if any of you have had your windshield replaced, and if so, who you used to do it. Mine was cracked by a freeway rock and I'm curious whether I should look for a local shop or dealer to do the job or use one of the national franchises like Safelite. I'm in San Diego.
Thanks to any of you that can share your experience.

Go to a glass shop that has been there for a long time and ask for the best most experienced installer to do the job. A dealer won't do it, they will just sublet it to a glass shop.

Had a small rock chip and was just going to have it fixed at the local glass shop. That's when I found out State Farm doesn't pay for repairing chips anymore. So I had a new windshield put in. Local shop 30 years in the same place and they had done some other work for me. They did great. They had to keep it over night and kept it inside their shop. I'll be back. Like the other poster said, Local is good, they actually may have nore experience in their staff than other chain store. Probably family run which is a plus.

How bad is the crack? I got mine wacked a couple of months ago right in the center, nice little shot wih spider like runs.I didnt want to replace through insurance and raise any red flags to raise my rate or cancel. I went to Safelite to get a price, about 1400 with HUD. I had them repair instead. 65 dollars and you can hardly see the crack. It looks damn good and it hasnt ran anymore in several months.Look into that. You can get a repair quote on their website.

Yea, I had another one fixed like yours about a year ago but this one is a lot bigger and spreads out into three separate paths, so I don't want to go that route again. Beside that, the winsdhield if full of other pits in my line of sight. So I am going to bite the bullet and get it replaced. Someone else on the forum posted their replacement experience with Safelite some time ago and as I recall it was pretty positive. So I wanted to see if others had a good experience there too (or somewhere else).

I have replaced five windshields in Corvettes here, in stoney AZ. Find (ask around) the best shop you can and be sure they get the right windshield. (hud, etc.) If you have a Corvette club in your area, they might have some ideas. DO NOT go to a dealer if you can help it.

I have checked around in North Florida and lower Alabama anyshops I talk to are having to get the windshield at the dealer and then install. Price has ran from 900.00 to 1500.00 I can buy at body shop price but no shop so far will install even if I pay at the dealer and they pick it up. PITA!

An experienced installer will also know how to remove/install the rear view mirror correctly. If not done right it will be loose and rattle. There should be earlier posts on windshield replacement relating to that issue.

Personally if I can get my windshield repaired instead of replaced I will always go that route.

make sure the glass is from PPG or Pilkington and if you have HUD that they use the right piece. DO NOT use offshore glass! It will not be equal.

I guess everything is more expense in California. I was quoted $1800 to replace one on an 07. Good thing I didn't have to buy one.

I paid that to have mine replaced 2 years ago but insurance took care of it.

Had to have mine replaced earlier this year. The best thing is to ask the glass shops if they've got experience replacing Corvette windshields. In the Atlanta area, they were very honest about it...meaning they didn't want to touch the car if they hadn't relaced one before.

Luckily, the $1,600.00 job only cost me $50.00. It was covered by my comprehensive coverage with Allstate.

Absolutely 100% correct, and charge you a mark-up for the luxury of making the phone call to the Glazier of THEIR CHOICE, not yours.

...when they finish - make sure you check your rearview mirror. Typically, removing and remounting the rearview mirror usually results in it developing a slight wiggle/or a little play/movement. You can do a search on this forum for more on the problem - but basically the mounting ball/pivot portion of the mirror is a poor design and it takes some adjustment to correct the problem. However, if you catch it while your there/bring it to their attention before/checking after the install - they will be able to correct the problem before you leave the shop.

I bought my windshield from GMpartshouse and had a local installer put it in. I bought the weatherstrip but they didn't need it. They said they can usually re-use the weatherstrip one time. The only thing that scared me was that if they broke the windshiled while installing it, they wouldn't pay for a new one. They assured me that is was rare, but they were just covering their butts.

I think I paid $150 for the install and the windshiled was cheaper than the glass shop could even get it for. I probably saved 400 - 500 bucks doing it this way.

Bottom line is find a good local shop and check GMpartshouse.

And I have not had any problems whatsoever.

Cheers,

Just had mine done today by All Star Glass. I would recommend them.
