The Mobil 1 website has a huge article on how they ran a Range Rover or Land Cruiser or something around the world. It was very interesting. Anyway, I would check the oil and when it gets looking dirty I would change it. I would never go one year without changing the oil. I probably wouldnt even go over 8,000 miles unless it was in a couple months or less. I only have 7,000 miles on my 05 and I probably changed the oil 6 times in an 05. Yeah, I know its overkill however oil and filters are cheap in my opinion.
If you want to choose your oil change intervals based on a Mobil 1 sales pitch then be my guest. I suggest you do some research though. Synthetic lasts longer but 100k miles is a bit of a stretch.
I've seen that ad, but not recently........I THINK that there is a disclaimer that flashes up on the screen in really small letters that says that the oil filters were changed at some intervals during the 100K mile test......if they topped off the oil each time, then the test comes better into focus.........
There may be no practical necessity for changing my motor oil prior to the remaining oil life indicator 'saying' to but I will continue to do so anyway. It doesn't cost much and I believe fresh, clean oil is always preferable to older, dirtier oil.
Changing your oil any sooner than what the DIC says is a waste of time, money, and engine life. Scientific studies of synthetic oil show that when you change the oil, you actually increase engine wear the first few thousand miles, and the as the oil ages, wear decreases. The oil does wear out (no pun intended
) and does need to be replaced, but studies have also show that adding small amounts of new oil increase the life of the oil dramatically. If your concerned about dirty oil, you are better off replacing only the filter and adding a half-quart than changing the oil every 3k or 5k.

Every quart of 5w30 Mobil1 I've ever seen meets the spec -- which do not?

In Corvettes since the C5 oil changes every 5,000 miles have been a waste of money. With the standard fill Mobil 1 synthetic the manual states change the oil when the oil life monitor tells you to. It is actually a very time proven system that monitors engine rpm and temperature over ignition cycles (grossly simplified). Using the oil life monitor and driving conservatively you will get around 10,000 miles on the clock before it comes up to change. Then manual in these cases reverts to once per year at a minimum.
My opinion is that if you are changing your oil any more than when the DIC tells you to you are wasting your time, your money and perfectly good oil.
I wouldn't however go along with letting it go 100,000 miles.

That is exactly how I do mine.

What's with people not being able to spell "MOBIL"? Its written on their ads, on your oil cap, and on every single bottle. Its not that hard, is it?
If you do a search for "MOBILE" here you get about as many hits as "MOBIL", yet I don't think they are all referring to cell phones...

I change my oil when I rotate my tires: at 5000 mile intervals. That's just cautious maintenance and it makes it easier to tell when they need to be done. For a lot of people here that'd be about three times in two years.
It's just a matter of opinion, not calculus.

I Know this because the Extended Performance was the only type left in the store and immediately after putting it in my car I looked at the back of the bottle. The GM spec listed was different than the one in the owners manual. After some checking I found out the GM spec listed for the Mobil 1 EP does not meet the Corvette GM 4718M spec.
I had about a 45 second oil change interval back to the regular Mobil 1. You can go to mobiloil.com and look at the different types and specs for each one. It's an easy mistake to make. Just trying to save others from wasting $45.00 in oil.
I didn't know this -- thanks for the good info. I'll be looking more carefully at the labels now...

No I'm not talking about viscosities. The Mobil 1 Extended Performance label does not meet GM 4718M as specified by your manual. It does have a GM specification but does not meet the one for the Corvette.

Oil lubricates and cools. Viscosity in Mobil 1 does go down with use, milage and heat.
Rotate your tires ?????
If they use Mobil-1 at all. Unless you see them pour from a bottle, how would you know? Even if the service writer specifies it the tech has to remember that this car is different than other cars. Maybe he will, maybe he won't. If I couldn't change my own oil I'd actually prefer a fast change place, where I could watch them closely, and perhaps bring my own supplies.
