Once I determined that my dealer did not have what I wanted and an inventory search turned nothing within 600 miles, I asked my dealer to place a factory order for my 08 Coupe.
The process was described by the dealer as taking 4 to 5 weeks for the car to be delivered. He said that once the order was in the order was placed he would send me a confirmation by email.
The order went in on Jan 2 according to the dealer. I have not recieved a confirmation at this point and the dealer says they don't have it yet.
How does this process work and when do I call BS on the dealer? I would love to know how all this should work so I can"t be taken for a ride by the dealer.
Back in 1998, when I ordered my 1999 Nassau Blue coupe. It took 11 weeks and 1 day. That was from the day I ordered it, untill it came in and I took delivery. I was worth the wait. My C6 will be special ordered also.
Under normal circumstances and if the dealer has an allocation for build, the process will take 6-8 weeks. If not it could take months. Your first question should be when their allocation is for. Once your order is entered you should get a order number. Your dealer can then track your order in the GM system and it will be reported via Event status codes.
STATUS EVENT CODES
1100-Order placed at dealer
1101-Order accepted by GM
2001-Order generated to dealer
2005-Order replaced with GM Prospec order
2050-Order changed
2500-Order sent to production, preferenced
3000-Order accepted by production control
3100-Order available to sequence (now the tpw becomes more stable)
3300-Order selected for production by assembly plant
3400-Order broadcasted for production
3800-Vehicle produced
4150-Vehicle invoiced to dealer
4200-Vehicle shipped
5000-Vehicle delivered to dealer
6000-Vehicle delivered to customer
If you suspect a problem, I think you should go to the dealer and ask to see their allocation schedule. At least ask the dealer point blank when they will have an allocation for your order. JMO. Good luck. Congratulations too!!!!!

Wow - thanks for this information...just ordered mine last week and was wondering how long I should expect to wait...
My order was placed on 1/2/2008. Here it is 1/11/2008 and the event code is still 1100. I am thinking allocation issues at the dealer. He insists that thats not the case but won't show me proof otherwise.
I am thinking of finding another dealer who will substantiate allocation here in my area and moving my business to them.
What is a normal timeframe if he has allocation for an order to go beyond 1100?
I ordered my coupe back on 12/26 from Rick Corvette Conti at EVS Chevrolet, who is a very trustworthy dealer with large allocations and mine is still sitting at 1100. Rick thinks the build week will be in late February, which will be here before I know it. Good dealers like EVS will track your order codes and share the information.
I agree with many of the others in this thread who say whatever it takes, it will be worth the wait.
If you are anywhere close to the factory, you might want to check out the “buyer’s tour” from the National Corvette Museum. It would make the build all that more memorable, plus they track the build process fro you too.

I do agree ! on the "Buyers Tour" I spent all day at the factory watching my! car being assembled, I was not close to the factory (CA.) but it was on my list of things I always wanted to do and I had to ask myself , what are you waiting for ? It was a Great day !
Dan
I ordered my 2008 on December 3rd and had a comfirmation in about 10 days. I am, as we speak, here in BG watching my car being built and will accept delivery on January 25th here at the museum. Bear in mind that the factory was closed for 2 weeks over the holidays and may be a bit beind in getting out the confirmations. BTW, I cannot recommend the museum delivery high enough as well as the Buyers Tour. Keep on you dealer for info. Good luck.
On 11/19/07 I placed my order for museum delivery. I didn't get my Target Production Week (TPW) until 1/5. My Vette will be produced on 1/22 and I will pick it up at the Museum on 2/1. For me the whole process will take 11 weeks. I believe it would have been a week or so faster if the dealer had more allocations. My neighbor and I placed our orders at the same time so that we could go to the Museum together to pick up our cars. The dealer never told us, and we didn't ask, about allocations. Eleven weeks is a long time, but I know that it will be worth it!
Placed order with dealer 3 Dec. After one-week dealer stated about getting the order picked up, (heard much about dealers getting allocation and such) but the order was in. I called as well as wrote Chevy about allocation to a dealer on a car order, if there were any (since the larger dealers did pitch that as a selling point) for the couple of hundred $’s difference I would go to another dealer.
On the phone call Chevy said there wasn’t. After they received my letter, Chevy called me, gave me a case # and said the order was in hand and I could call them for weekly up dates.
My dealer has been giving me weekly up dates, last week @ 3000, order accepted by production.
Received call late yesterday and schedule production, week of Jan 28. And from what I have read on the Forum, they hold the car 2 weeks before shipping. So with the down time for the holidays @ factory, its about in line with the 6 to 8 weeks as stated by Chevy and dealer.
The letter to Chevy and their reply was my piece of mind.

Only Museum delivery cars (option R8C) are held for two weeks. This is a mandatory hold for all museum deliveries. Other production vehicles are released to Allied transportation on the day they come off the line. some are held for an extra day for random quality inspections and drive-ability tests, this will add another day unless a problem is found.
The cars waiting for transportation are held in a fenced yard at the assembly plant. Cars are sequenced for delivery by location. When allied has enough to fill a truck headed to your area they will ship the car. This can take a day to a week. The last variable is the distance to your dealer from the plant and this will vary the transit time.
to answer OP's second question, see Talon's response. 6-8 weeks for delivery from order. ASSUMING order has a near-term allocation.
Read his post again, please. You need to ask the dealer (while you are there) to see his actual allocation because he is being prevaricative with you.
All dealers have a monthly allocation report which shows allocations by week over the month. They get this report via the GM Workbench application, in essence the same system they place orders. Find out who in the dealership places the orders and that person can get the allocation report. Salesmen usually do not have access to the system but know the person who has that responsibility.
