08 vette with 4000 miles and on comes the "Engine check" light. Then it goes off after two or three days, took it to the dealer while the light was off, dealer claims nothing is wrong with it and no data in the computer--a week later and on the freakin thing comes on again two days later off it goes...any suggestions ?
Plug one of these into your cars OBDII port and it will log and retain all the codes: http://www.davisnet.com/drive/produc...asp?pnum=08226 I have an older model and it works pretty well. You can also use it as a basic scan tool or to reset the CEL.
From: Currently somewhere in IL,IN,KY,TN,MO,AR,MS,AL, or FL
Find a new dealer. I had a similar situation where the CEL would come on but the dealer said there was no code. I finally got them to tell me there were codes but the proceedure was to always clear all codes before diagnosing the car. So if the problem wasn't active at the time it was in the shop they couldn't find anything wrong. IDIOTS!!!! That's why the computer sets AND REMEMBERS codes! All they had to do was read the code BEFORE resetting and the issue was quickly resolved. I hope this isn't your problem. The most common CEL here is gas cap loose.
And people wonder why I dislike dealer service so much.
As a matter of fact I'm taking my car back for the 3rd time for this.. I am throwing codes P0171/74.. They're replacing the MAF (mass air flow sensor) today and hope it cures the problem. GM knows that this is an issue and I've been told (no sure if its true) that they are going to redesign the MAF.. BTW, I have an 08 with 2500 miles.. Let us know what the codes are...
Also your dealer is a LIAR... When that light comes on it traps something for a code. One thing I did was when the engine light was ON, I had Onstar run a diagnostic as I was driving. They said there was a problem, but wouldn't tell me a code.. I have a problem with that and will be firing off an email about that..
Ok, so I just got back from the dealer.. He put a new MAF (mass air flow sensor) and the car got WORSE.... Once again, it seems that this is happening all over and they know about it.. It could be a design flaw in the air intake or MAF.... The mechanic told me to drive the car as long as the light isn't blinking and they will call me once GM has a fix.... Mileage does suffer somewhat, but its winter here in NY so I won't be driving it as much as I would like anyway..
[QUOTE=You might want to double check your gas cap, sometimes they have caused a CEL.[/QUOTE]
Also check Air Filter??????? mine was dirty caused a C E L...PO171 Code.

I would also have a problem with Onstar not providing the code. I had a recent problem and Onstar provided the code.
