I have a HALLTECH and absolutley love it, however the Vararam CAI (cold air intake) is the majority favorite of the CF peeps as far as horsepower goes. Plus the famous "Chuck CoW" endorses them so you know they must work great.
I believe there are a few that will produce comparable performance gains. That said I'm extremely pleased with my Lingenfelter CAI...they make quality products and Lingenfelter performance is legendary.
I am not sure if the OP is asking about CAI or intake manifolds, FAST is the top of the line, however it does require cutting of your cowl. I went with a ported intake and love it along with the ported throttle body.
I don't know too much about modding but I am learning everyday here on the forum. I was wondering approx how much an intake would cost to buy/install? Not an exact figure, as i know it varies by location, but just a ballpark figure. Would a couple hundred bucks be a safe bet?

A ported stock intake would be a couple hundred bucks. But then you have to pay for a tune and thats a couple more hurdred bucks.
You can find the Fast90 intakes for $750 on ebay. But then you need the kit to install. All in all for a Fast90 ported, installed, kit, and dyno tuned, i am betting 1800 for everything.
If you mean cold air intake, then the Vararam is the way to go, imo. If you're looking for an intake for the engine, FAST shows good gains on the dyno over stock, but expensive and I didn't see any gains at the track from it, despite the 14rwhp dyno gain. From what I've seen the FAST works best with AFR or other aftermarket heads.

Actually if you look on the Vararam site you will see some data from a GM Hi-Tech Performance magazine (see below) test which shows the VR-SC1 averaged a .21 gain over stock in the 1/4 mile. That is, IMO, about what the gain should be for any true closed system CAI. This is borne out by the fact that my Xcelerator CAI (Callaway Honker clone) gave me a .20 second gain in the 1/4 mile. Its interesting to note that just propping open the shroud 3" with the stock filter picked me up .08.
