The CAGS (computer aided gear selection) was put in the Corvette to avoid a gas guzzler tax plain and simple. The program that is used to test vehicles for the CAFE ( corporate average fuel economy) uses a very specific set of driving criteria. The CAGS was designed to limit the fuel consumption at specific points in the test to allow lower RPM operation during low speed operation and register better MPG.
It is designed to operate under very specific circumstances that are test points for the computer guided CAFE test:
One to Four Shift Light
(Manual Transmission)
When this light comes on,
you can only shift from
FIRST (1) to FOURTH (4)
instead of FIRST (1) to
SECOND (2).
You must complete the shift into FOURTH (4) to turn
off this feature. This helps you get the best possible
fuel economy.
After shifting to FOURTH (4), you may downshift to a
lower gear if you prefer.
Notice: Forcing the shift lever into any gear except
FOURTH (4) when the 1 TO 4 SHIFT light comes
on may damage the transmission. Shift only from
FIRST (1) to FOURTH (4) when the light comes on.
This light will come on when:
• The engine coolant temperature is higher than
169°F (76°C),
• you are going 15 to 19 mph (24 to 31 km/h) and
• you are 21 percent throttle or less.
Under light throttle slow speed conditions (I'm sure someone here will chime in with the exact #'s), the manual transmission will strongly suggest you shift from 1st to 4th. Basically is guides you into 4th as you pull back on the shifter.
On manual tranny if you drive like an old man the tranny forces you to go from 1st to 4th gear and skip 2nd and 3rd, It is supposed to improve fuel economy.
I don't seem to have mine kick in that often. If it does, I just give it some more gas and then shift to 2nd.
