looking for information
new to the forum, always loved but never owned a corvette, game plan was to buy a 05(c-6) within the next two years..saw" consumer reports" say, stay from 05-06 because of electrical problems and other issues.what say the people who own them?Should I wait another year or two until I can afford an 07 or 08? or are the problems overblown.?Thanks,
I don't think it matters. Vettes are not known for their reliability, period. I bought my vette because I wanted a vette. If you do a search on the forum there are some people who have lemons unfortunately.

I've owned my 05 for 3-yrs with no problems ~ re consumer reports "...stay away..." ridiculous. However, regardless of which model year you buy ~ if its used, thoroughly check out the car before you buy it ~ if its new...hopefully you'll have years of trouble-free ownership.

Consumer Reports gets their information from the Annual Survey they send out to their members (subscribers). If it says the car is unreliable, it is based on the complaints of Corvette owners who are also subscribers. In the last survey I received, I reported that there were no problems with my 06.
I think the report regarding the electrical problems may be refering to the battery going dead in the 05 with manual transmissions. This was not a problem with the 06, you can park it in any gear you like. The manual for the 05 clearly stated to put the car in reverse and engage the e-brake when you park it.
A lot of people don't read the manual thus all the dead batteries.
One thing to watch for in the 05's to early 07's is delamination or cracking of the roof panels. Mostly the painted panels.

Go into this purchase with your eyes open and find a good one. Have the VIN run for repair history and recalls and have the car looked over by an owner or experienced Corvette mechanic and you will be good to go. I would buy a 2005 again without a seconds thought.

Buy the newest you can afford. Every model year Corvette seems to have its own set of glitches no matter what the model year my 2008 is no different.
I did a search for "dead battery" in the titles of C6 forum threads. There were SEVENTY-ONE C6 threads started with "dead battery" in the title. There are thousands of posts regarding DBS (Dead Battery Syndrome) in these threads.

I put a NEW fully-charged Optima redtop in my C6, drove around for a couple of hours, and parked the car in reverse. Seven days later I went to start it; DEAD BATTERY.
Evidently (theoretically), there is a flaw in the firmware of the BCM (Body Control Module). GM issued a TSB (Bulletin No.: 07-06-03-001B) in response to this problem. I am told the dealer can do a flash of the BCM to correct/improve this known problem.
I've seen heaps of C6 guys (every year included) talk/complain about the fact that they have to use a battery tender (charger) when they park their car for anything more than a couple of days.

In my third year of ownership with my '05 C6 coupe. If you find a good one they are as good as any car on the road. No battery issues for me. Transparent top so the top delamination was not an issue. The only thing I've done is change the oil and drive it for 18,000 miles.

I'm at 22k and enjoy the same wonderful Precision Red color as Paul's car - - -my top was injected under warranty and have had no issues. Great car, good value. Buy smart and buy right.
Consumer reports does a geat job testing toasters and vacuum cleaners. I would never....NEVER let them pick a car for me. Chances are great if you can pick up an '05 with low miles that any bugs have all been worked out and serviced. Check the service history of the car, and if it has had the roof done, and been in for a couple of other minor things, I would say the previous owner got things taken care of when something was needed.......don't delay your pruchase if you can afford one now. Vettes have never been more affordable than they are right NOW!!!
Certainly check the service history of any prospective used car and stay away from those with the so-called 'known issues.' A poll I conducted a year or more ago showed that the vast majority (over 90%) of 2005 C6 owners considered their car to be reliable and they were quite satisfied. Although certain problems are very real, I believe they truly affect only a small minority of cars.
FWIW, my 2005 MN6 has been extremely reliable and trouble free (as much or more than any of the 3 BMW's I've owned).
