Fired up the '08 today for the 3rd time since Nov.and ran it around until oil came up to temp but noticed the ambient outside temp read 39 degrees. It's 68 in Cleveland and wondered if any one else has experienced this? Outside of this minor annoyance, everything looked and sounded great. Until the cold and snow dumps on us again.
You need to break at the owners manual for this one. The information is there explaining what and when the outside temp gage reads. In just general terms I believe the ouside temp will show what was there the last time the car was turned off. You have to drive it at/above a certain speed for a set amount of time before the temp will update. All has to do with the climate control system. Again, read the manual for info on this.
Found this info of page 3-29:
If the outside temperature goes up, the displayed
temperature will not change until:
• The vehicle’s speed is above 12 mph (19 km/h) for
five minutes.
• The vehicle’s speed is above 32 mph (52 km/h) for
two and a half minutes.
These delays prevent false readings. If the temperature
goes down, the outside temperature will be shown
when you start the vehicle. If it has been turned off for
less than three hours, the temperature will be recalled
from the previous vehicle operation.
There is also an inside temperature sensor located to
the left of the ignition switch. The automatic climate
control system uses this sensor to receive information,
so if you block or cover it, the system will not function
properly.

I used to live near Cleveland. Maybe the car just assumes its still 30 degrees colder because that's the way Cleveland usually is, or will be again soon.
The other thing to remember is that if you happen to drive through some standing water and get some on the sensor, it will not read correctly until the water shakes off or dries.....
