Has anyone ever heard of this happening? I sent a good friend of mine down to our local dealer several weeks ago to order his dream car, a Silver 2008 Z06. Yesterday, he gets a call from our salesman who tells him that GM is NOT Building any more silver Z06's for 2008 and that he has until Saturday to choose another color. He was going to have museum delivery, factory tour, the whole thing. The dealer is trying to find a silver Z somewhere in the country with his options, but I can't believe in this business environment that a company would thumb its nose at a guy writing a check for close to $80k. I'm as PO'd as my friend at a company that would do something like this. Only comfort is I can go home and get in my beautiful LMB 07 C6. My buddy is so ticked, he talking crazy stuff like going and buying a porsche.
GM is closing out the 2008 production run, and they are getting the last orders for the model year put into the system. The salesman was telling your friend that GM has capped the number of silver Z06's and/or the number of accepted orders is rapidly hitting the maximum. Since your friend is special ordering a car, there will be certain restraints in the system. He could order a 2009. Or, he can look for a car already in the system, but that would eliminate the R8U option. Corvettes are not quite the same as getting a Camry or a G6 - there are limitations on what can be accomplished. GM simply cannot restart a production line because one person wants a special item.
If the museum delivery is a deal breaker, then he'll have to accept another color. If not, then look in the system for a car.
jeffhardy.com has 194 silver Z06's in the system nationwide. Lots of interior colors, options, etc. There isn't one there that he'd like?

too bad the order wasen't accepted last week before the constraint. dealer most likely did not have an allocation a few weeks ago.
Given that color was right in the middle of popularity for the Z06 in 2007 at 13% of the production, can you really believe what you are hearing? I wonder if there is a way to find out how many they have already produced in the 2008 model year.
The order cycle is nearly closed for the 2008 models. The Machine silver is not being carried over for 2009. Colors get constrained at the end of each model year. The production schedule is likely pretty much set for the balance of the year and it doesn't include machine silver.
Your friend shouldn't have waited so long. This is information that was published a few weeks ago. It really isn't a surprise. I realize this isn't what you want to hear. The amount of money really isn't the issue. There is a new silver coming out for 2009. Perhaps he should just wait.

Besides, the Cyber Grey is MUCH better looking than Machine Silver (IMNSHO.)
So GM should change it's build processes to appease your friend??CAR COMPANY'S go on build down each year to prepare for the next years build up.That's how it is.I'm sure there's a silver Z somewhere out there. If not, just get an 09!
What others are saying about production constraints is correct. When I ordered my 07 C6 Coupe in Monterey Red Metallic, the car was built during the last week of availability for that color. Since Corvettes always change or tweak their metallic red colors from year to year, the order had to be in by a certain timeframe or you were forced to either wait for the next year's color or find one in dealer inventory. With the 09's having a change in Silver color, this is not surprising.

There is also a light silver color that will be out on the 2009 model to go along with the Cyber Gray but I agree, Cyber gray is one of the best colors I've ever seen on a Corvette.

So you're saying this has been known? Seems to me that the dealer should have been up on this, plus also known about colors getting constrained at the end of a model year and been pro active to check.

You'd be surprised at how little dealerships know about every line of car they sell.

Exactly.
It is frustrating I know, but please do keep in mind that there are going to be some small sacrifices that have to be tolerated when you're getting $300k+ sports car type performance/amenities for only $70k (or less).
NO OTHER carmaker can deliver ALL that a C6 Z06 delivers for that kind of coin. I would never bash an entire car company over an issue such as this, small price to pay in my opinion.

Last year about this time Monterey Red and Lemans blue went on constraint. It may or may not lift prior to the end of the year. It will depend on how many panels they have painted ahead of the line and when they need to prototype the new color on the line. If the new color is too close to the old color they need to exhaust all of one before they can start the next one to avoid mix-ups on the line. As sad as it is you will find far more dealers that are less informend than most of the members of this forum. There is a lot that they don't know about Corvettes. The sad reality is that most dealers don't sell but 4 Corvettes a year and have very little information to offer.
When constraint lists come out it is on constraint for a minimum of two weeks. To your question - Published on this very forum yesterday.
2008 Corvette
The Original Design Corvette chrome aluminum wheel (QX3) has now been built out and has been replaced by the new 2008 design forged chrome aluminum wheel (Q9V). Any new or unpreferenced orders containing the option (QX3) chrome wheel will need to be changed to the new (Q9V) forged aluminum chrome wheel.
Weekly Constraint/Production News - UPDATED
Constraints are distributed based on Available Days’ Supply (ADS), Controlled Method or Percent of Allocation (POA). Dealers can use the weekly constraint wire to see the basic availability of an option. The percentages on the weekly constraint wire are estimated based on the national retail number of the constrained option divided by the amount of retail orders being allocated for the week.

I know what your friend is going through. Same happened to me last year. Wanted Monterey Red but waited too long. Missed it by 2 days, but was not aware of the cutoff date. So I went with LeMans blue.
Just talked with the dealer yesterday about ordering a '09 Z06 in Cyber Gray, assuming it's available on the Z06.
Surely you can find a dealer who has one coming or already on the lot.
