Ok guys I need your expertise in finding out if this tire company is responsible for damaging the inside of my C6 Split Spoke Rims and my Stock C6 Star rims. Last Saturday I took my Wheels to be exchanged out from my Perfect stock C6 Star rims to some stock Split Spoke rims) and me being the cautious guy I am I repeatedly asked that my rims were not going to be scratched. I was assured they would not.
Ok Well during the process All my rims now have little gouge Marks inside where the tire machine held the rims. There aprox 8 gouges inside each rim. I know they are in the inside however our rim spokes are very open and if looked at (During shoes and such) they can be seen. Am I wrong to be upset or is this part of the tire removal and installation process??
I observed their machine afterwards and the tips where it holds the rim and the part that pushes the tire down for removal looked extremely worn, I am no expert but It looked like it needed to be replaced.
There are so many varibles that come into play here. First, did you show the manager your new wheels before installing, or maybe , you could have taken pictures , even cell phone pics, with the wheels right there when they were being inspected. Does the tire shop have a policy on damaged wheels, some do, while many other don't. However, if you noticed the damaged there, I would have left the wheels at the shop, if you brought them home and noticed, well then, it may be more difficult. Many forum members have had this problem, it's almost impossible not to get some little flaws, it really depends on what you can live with. Good luck and keep us posted.
It's hard to tell exactly how scratched they are but I think any time you pull tires off a rim you're subject to having some minor 'scratching.' What is acceptable or reasonable and how bad they are is subjective. If you feel it's excessive then by all means pursue it. If it's truly minor I'd let it go.
For everyone here who goes to a tire shop (and I just learned this a couple of years ago, after a tire shop severly damaged all four of my magnesium wheels on the tire mounter....)...there are hard plastic extensions that can be placed on the tips of the bottom grippers on the tire mounting apparatus.
The employees don't like to use these because they make doing the tire slower, they come off and have to be put back on, etc....they can be kind of a pain to use, but they will NOT scratch your wheels.
But....ASK for these to be used everytime you have your car worked on, then watch to make sure that they do.......even have it written on the work order. They are the same size as the ends of the grips, and slip over the metal ends. If they don't have them or do not know what you are talking about, don't let them anywhere near your wheels....
