93 octane is the premium fuel here so that is what I use.

Percentage wise it doesn't make sense not to use 93...
Yep! ...and some places, it's only 5% more @ $4.20

Axl Jack, I live near Reading PA. However, I am up in your neck of the woods a decent amount as my family has season tickets to the WB Pens.

I guess the advice I got years ago about unbranded gas may be false, at least today anyways. A one time customer of mine who owned a chain of gas stations told me that most of the unbranded gasolines do not have all the additives in their premium fuels (89 octane and higher) as the main stream branded offerings do (like Exxon, Sunoco, etc.)...

Because I have witnessed the difference of internal components (over long turn) of top-tier and NON top-tier gasolines, I am a very strong supporter of it's use.

In the event anyone is interested here is GM's current list of top-tier gasoline providers.....

Chevron
Texaco
QuikTrip
MFA Oil Co. (Break Time stores)
Conoco
Phillips 66
76
Entec Stations
Shell
The Somerset Refinery, Inc. (Somerset Oil)
Kwik Trip / Kwik Star
Aloha Petroleum
Tri-Par Oil Co.
Turkey Hill Minit Markets
Severson Oil Co. (Mileage Stations)
Chevron Canada
Shell Canada
Petro-Canada
Sunoco Canada

Default Preparing to don my flak vest and kevlar helmet...

I have been running mid-grade (I believe it's 87 octane around here - but it might be 89) in my Vettes for the past three years (04 C5 and an 05 C6). I never had a problem with mid-grade, and after reading an article from a very learned source, I am now on my second tank of, yes, Shell regular (85 - maybe 87, with 15% ethanol in the mix, no less). As far as I can tell, the car performs just as well, and there is no sign of knock, etc. I have tried "premium" (91) but I couldn't see any advantages, so I switched back to the lower octane gasolines.

Before you jump down my throat, keep in mind that my Vette is my daily driver; thus, if I can save $4-5 per fillup, that is significant - at least, to me it is. Also keep in mind that I am in Colorado at 6,000+ ft. altitude, which is the likely reason (and was the article's premise) that I can get away with using lower octane gas.

Okay, I am now hunkered down in my foxhole: all of you purists feel free to fire away!!!

Obviously you should be tarred and feathered for treating you beloved car with such low grade fuel.

The only problem with that logic is that 1) the price difference between mid grade and premium is usually about 10 cents per gallon. That would put the savings on a tank of gas around $1.60 and 2) with the 87 or 89 octane, the engine timing will be adjusted by the ECU to compensate and as a result you will be getting fewer miles per gallon. So the end result is that per tank you will actually be spending more to go the same distance with the 87 or 89 fuel over the 91 or higher octane.

To all you 93 octane users. You realize that there is no performance gain if you use fuel higher in octane than the engine was designed for which by the way is 91. So why use 93 unless that's the only way to get at least 91? In that case you could use one fill up with 93 and at half tank fill up with 87, result 91. And then back to 93 on the next. It's just pushing buttons. It may just be me but I don't like to just throw money away.

In Oregon we only have 87, 89 and 92. There is no 91 option. I am guessing the same holds true in the 93 states...
