Well my 2005 C6 just ate the serpentine belt, guess the crank pulley has struck. Purchased 12/04 only 17K miles. Out of warranty, way to go GM. Should have known American quality doesn't compare with foreign. You get what u pay for, buy Carrera next time.
I have to admit, that is a very bad design. So when you install your next pulley (UD), use this pin kit from Magnuson as insurance, about $80. I've heard ARP has a kit as well.

I would check with your dealer. This is a known issue and they could cover it. It only happens to early 05's.
Or maybe not buy used??? That way you'd have a warranty, and/or you'd know if the problem was GM's or abuse?
Thank goodness you didn't buy a first or second year Boxter... 50% (or more) had to have the engines replaced due to wonderful German engineering!
His was bought new, '05 warranty 3 years, 36K miles.
This is a known defect with early '05's up to VIN 11300 or so.
It has affected 2% or more of these cars, and can obviously strike years later. One reason I bought the first extended warranty in my life. On my early '05!

The extra money you will spend on the Carrera will more than pay for the crank pulley, if that is what it turns out to be (you make it seem like it has not been diagnosed yet).

Lets see here, you bought the car new? in 04, been a member here since 05, had a three year bumper to bumper, never brought the car in for crank pulley TSB, when it lets loose you whine like a little kid. Enjoy your Porsche next time.

Well is not that bad, actually they are no better or worst than Corvette, however, the parts cost is thru the roof, I just replaced a coolant reservior on a 01 Carrera, that plastic tank costs $342.78, plus my labor $210.00.
Sorry I'm staying with my Vette, and I'm a lifetime Carrera admirer.
I agree dropping the key was a questionable move but all of the Gen III and Gen IV V8 engines use a press-fit damper with no keyway. This has been the case since the LS1 was introduced in 1997. If the harmonic balancer simply walked and caused no other damage than shredding your belt(s)...it's unfortunate but it ain't that big of deal. If you wanted, you could always pin the crank to be 100% sure.
I think you're right though...you'd be much better off in a Porsche Carrera. Good luck.
NYC6,
It is GM policy to not do anything unless the damper exhibits problems. So even if you take it in, they will not perform the mod until the damper falls off.

Not true in all cases. My brother brought his to the dealer in 06 and they did it without any signs of problems with no questions asked.
The actual TSB issued by GM does NOT allow for proactive installation of the DEW, which essentially eliminated the crank pulley issue among the first 11,039 cars produced. It allows for the fix in cases of belt squeal or complete failures but, if you just walk into a dealer and ask for the fix, it's unlikely it will be done.
Yes, some dealers did perform the fix on a proactive basis. I had mine done early on, with no signs of failure, by a very cooperative dealer who noted, "Customer complains of noise from belts." on his work order. That's all he had to do to get the TSB authorized for my 2005.
Although the failure rate remains relatively low, it's still something to worry about with any early 2005. IMHO, GM will honor the TSB even if the car is now out of warranty. I have already heard of this being done. If higher mileage failures keep happening, GM may eventually be forced to issue a recall and have the DEW installed in all the first 11,039 cars.
The problem was traced to an improperly aligned torque machine in the Canadian plant, but GM has no idea how many bolts were improperly torqued or which cars they wound up in.
