Outside temp reading...

This sensor reads the outside air temperature and
helps to maintain the temperature inside the vehicle.
Any cover on the front of the vehicle could give a false
reading in the temperature.
If the outside temperature goes up, the displayed
temperature will not change until:
• The vehicle’s speed is above 12 mph (19 km/h) for
five minutes.
• The vehicle’s speed is above 32 mph (52 km/h) for
two and a half minutes.
These delays prevent false readings. If the temperature
goes down, the outside temperature will be shown
when you start the vehicle. If it has been turned off for
less than three hours, the temperature will be recalled
from the previous vehicle operation.
Condition/
Display
At start up with the engine OFF more than 3 hours
Displays actual outside temperature
At start up with the engine OFF less than 3 hours
Displays last stored temperature
Vehicle moving above 16 km/h (10 mph) for 5 minutes
Updates temperature display at a slow filtered rate.
Vehicle moving at 51 km/h (32 mph) or greater for 2.5 minutes
Updates temperature display as rapidly as possible.
When the sensor reading is less than the displayed value.
Updates temperature display as rapidly as possible.
When the Front Defrost, Rear Defog and fan up buttons are pressed simultaneously.
Updates temperature display instantly.

Elevation change of a few feet can make a noticable difference as can surrounding buildings or vegetation.
If any of you ride motorcycles I am sure you remember the "cold spots", especially when you're riding at night. The cold spots are an extreme example of local temperature variation.

My other car last night the temp in my garage must have been 77. I pulled out, and the temp on the display didn't change for a good 10 minutes.
So, I guess the Vette is about standard; sometimes a little shorter, sometimes longer.

I have had outside temp gages in 3 Vettes and 4 other family vehicles.
I find them to be reasonably accurate. Not perfect but close.
How they can calibrate these things to be as close as they are is quite a trick.
to the engineers that developed this gizmo
1. Television weather that was on before I got into car.
2. Radio weather reports
3. Bank/billboard signs.
That having been said, I fully understand that often, the TV/radio wx is coming from the airport wx station and there could just be natural variances (unless I'm sitting at the airport). In general, they're off a few degrees and I just look at them as conversation pieces for passengers. Don't really need the gauge to know it's either Heat Miser hot or Arctic Ice cold...
