Default Outside temp reading...

How accurate is your C6's outside ambient temp reading? Mine takes a long time to adjust after the car is started in the morning. Is that what happens with yours? How accurate is it?

If you are comparing your reading to the readouts at banks etc......those readings are notoriously inaccurate. Compare a reading in one block to the next.......that said, the temp sensors for GM are also notoriously problematic and are on the inexpensive side and easy to replace as well.

Regarding the Outside Air Temperature sensor.

There is also a sensor located behind the front bumper.
This sensor reads the outside air temperature and
helps to maintain the temperature inside the vehicle.
Any cover on the front of the vehicle could give a false
reading in the temperature.

If the outside temperature goes up, the displayed
temperature will not change until:
• The vehicle’s speed is above 12 mph (19 km/h) for
five minutes.
• The vehicle’s speed is above 32 mph (52 km/h) for
two and a half minutes.
These delays prevent false readings. If the temperature
goes down, the outside temperature will be shown
when you start the vehicle. If it has been turned off for
less than three hours, the temperature will be recalled
from the previous vehicle operation.
Further:

Condition/
Display

At start up with the engine OFF more than 3 hours
Displays actual outside temperature

At start up with the engine OFF less than 3 hours
Displays last stored temperature

Vehicle moving above 16 km/h (10 mph) for 5 minutes
Updates temperature display at a slow filtered rate.

Vehicle moving at 51 km/h (32 mph) or greater for 2.5 minutes
Updates temperature display as rapidly as possible.

When the sensor reading is less than the displayed value.
Updates temperature display as rapidly as possible.

When the Front Defrost, Rear Defog and fan up buttons are pressed simultaneously.
Updates temperature display instantly.

Mine is fairly accurate, this function is "padded", meaning is does not read in real time. It samples temperature over time and indicates the average value. Rapid fluctuations are not displayed. On initial start, mine seems to need 5 or 10 min. to indicate correctly.

Paul: That's what I see a delayed reaction. It's a bit odd to drive in 95F weather and the car stating 82F for a very long time. My other cars are real-time (and accurate too).

whew, I've set in Chicago rush hour traffic and it read more than 120 degrees on a 70 degree day. The sensor on mine must be next to the XM antenna

Do your other cars use the outside temperature reading in the operation of the climate control system? The C6 does. That's the reason for the delay.

It's usually not that accurate in my C6... But it gives you a decent ballpark number.

Sometimes when I wash my car, the outside temperature gauge will give an artificially low reading for a period of time. Othewise, I believe the gauge is fairly accurate.

Default Instant Temp Update

FWIW-according to a post from a GM service guy on a similar thread from a month or so ago, pushing the rear defrost, windshield defrost, and either of the fan speed buttons will instantly update the temp display to reflect the current outside temp. Works everytime for me.

Temperatures vary widely over a short distance in most areas. Austin, Tx has 2 reporting stations aprx 10 miles apart and reported temps can be 15° different.

Elevation change of a few feet can make a noticable difference as can surrounding buildings or vegetation.

If any of you ride motorcycles I am sure you remember the "cold spots", especially when you're riding at night. The cold spots are an extreme example of local temperature variation.

Seems to be fairly accurate and not slow to me.

My other car last night the temp in my garage must have been 77. I pulled out, and the temp on the display didn't change for a good 10 minutes.

So, I guess the Vette is about standard; sometimes a little shorter, sometimes longer.

Don't think the temp sensor can tell the difference between outside air and someones hot exhaust blowing on it.

I have had outside temp gages in 3 Vettes and 4 other family vehicles.
I find them to be reasonably accurate. Not perfect but close.

How they can calibrate these things to be as close as they are is quite a trick.

Temp sensors in all GM cars I've either owned or driven have ALWAYS been off by about +/-3-5 degrees when comparing to:

1. Television weather that was on before I got into car.
2. Radio weather reports
3. Bank/billboard signs.

That having been said, I fully understand that often, the TV/radio wx is coming from the airport wx station and there could just be natural variances (unless I'm sitting at the airport). In general, they're off a few degrees and I just look at them as conversation pieces for passengers. Don't really need the gauge to know it's either Heat Miser hot or Arctic Ice cold...
