I am looking to sell my C5 and buy a used C-6 (2006 or 2007) but I was told that GM voids warranty IF the car has a tune. FIRST: is this true?? SECOND: if it is true, how do I know if the car had/has a tune in it to effect my GM warranty?
Just out of curiousity have you found a car that was modded or something? Otherwise not many people bother getting the car tuned unless its highly modded.
And just a FYI factory warranties will be coming to an end soon for the 06's. 05's are already done. Will you be getting an extended warranty?
Yes, I belive this is true. Someone posted in one thread somewhere that the dealer can hook up to the computer and determine whether a tune has been performed. I don't have the post/thread but perhaps you can bring it to a dealership and pay to see if it has been tuned or perhaps a dealership might have some record that a tune has been performed.
It is true...anytime you performance modify or alter the operating parameters of the car this will jeopardize the warranty. From what I've read, GM has issued new software to check for non-GM tuning specs. Supposedly, once the tuning has been altered (and even if the tuning is reverted back to factory specs) they can still tell it has been altered.
Many C6 owners with automatic transmissions opt for custom tuning in an attempt to eliminate its undesirable characterics. If you're worried, you could always have the dealership check it out.

If you mean the latest rumors flying around, they equate to some other GM vehicles for now but the VETTE isn't far behind. In reality, any modded car is jeopardy of getting it's warranty cut.The C6 is the C5 on steroids so I wouldn't worry to much about not having a tune! The C5's lack of power in certain areas do not pertain to the C6!!
Only thing I saw additionally that I never saw confirmed is what if you take the ECM out and use a different one and then tune that ECM. If it came time to take it in for warranty, you put the car's original ECM back in. I don't want to even get into the ethics of it as I know that there are some that are upset (butt hurt is more the term) by this suggestion. And no, I haven't tuned but I did used HPTuners on my 04' and gained about 15 BHP with just a tune and breather. In my opinion, it was just my effort to conserve energy by producing a more efficient engine

It seems that any tune, hand held or laptop type, will void the warranty...if the dealer wants to...and as the car is used how do I know if it was done? If the dealer can tell it was done even if the previous owner removed it before turning in the car, then I'm screwed when I take the car in for service...not a time to find out!

It seems that most of the 06's that I've seen will go almost 12 mos more before the GM warranty runs out. There are a lot of things that could be the reason the person turned in their 06 or 07 so I want the option of having the factory warranty. I do plan on buying a GMPP warranty on the car before the 3/36 factory runs out, but if the car has a voided factorywarranty, the GMPP will be void as well. That is why I need to know this information.

I would suggest that if you even buy a used one, have the dealer do a check before you buy it.,
My 06 had a tune and a few bolt-on modes and sold by the dealer to a customer and very shortly the customer had an issue with it and dealership ended up with it back and they sent it to the auction. Best to cover your ***.

That is the key..."If the dealers wants to". So the question is how good of a relationship do you have with a servicing dealer. My car was heavily modified right after it was bought new and this never was an issue with my dealer.

In South Florida . . .
For the South Florida owners:
A number of other Forum members and I were at Horsepower Sales (HPS) in Pompano Beach today, and one of the many things that we learned is the HPS itself is a official warranty station for GMPP warranties. I would think that this would be one "dealer" that would be VERY VERY VERY "MOD FRIENDLY"

Really any performance mod will void the warranty, but most places won't be sticklers about it. The only situation that might come about, is if a mod/tune caused the broken part, then GM might not pay for it.
