Some of you may have read my earlier post about an object falling from an 18 wheeler and the resulting damage to my car. I received a call Wednesday from the body shop informing me that when they pulled the wheels off to have the driver's side tires replaced they discovered that the front wheel was bent. They filed a supplement with my insurance company for the replacement of the wheel and indicated that a new one would cost $800.00, and a remanufactured one would cost about $300.00. They called me the following day to tell me my insurance company had authorized purchase of a "new" polished aluminum wheel, and they had already ordered it. I asked them to keep the damaged wheel for me as I could use it in my garage to hang air hose on, and I was told that the original wheel had to be exchanged, or I could pay a $50.00 core charge to keep it. I've never heard of a core charge on a new part, how about you?
A new GM OEM wheel can come only from a GM dealer. There is no exchange, there is no core charge. The damaged wheel should always be scrapped, so it does not end up on another car.
Sounds to me like you are getting a remanufactured wheel. If so, I hope you have a good life insurance policy. You need a new wheel. Reman wheels and used wheels may not be safe. GM warns against use of used and reman wheels. Make sure you are getting a new GM OEM wheel.

There is a core charge. I don't know what they do with the old wheel but the parts guy wants it.
