During our drive to Lake Tahoe last week, the C5 in front of me had his left rear blow. All four of us pulled over and took a look. There was a tear about two inches in the tread of the tire. However, the run flat held up and kept the tire inflated and off of the rim. It appeared that the tire set about an inch or so lower than the others, but appeared to be quite driveable. So off we went at 50 mph for about 20 miles into Lake Tahoe. The runflat performed quite well, although he said the Vette felt a little squirrelly. Nice to see the runflats in action and know they work as advertised.
If you've never had quality high performance tires on your Corvette, you have no idea what you're missing.
You would prob only notice a difference if you were to track your car. 90% of Corvette owners dont drive the car to its limits so more than likely wouldnt notice. Best to have the run flats for safety.......

In other threads I've posted a picture of my HUD showing 1.2Gs. That was on runflats. Anyone who needs more than that on the street is .
After mods, car had 450 rwhp and 405 rwtq. Too much for stock tires so I went with LG's wheels and 275"s front, 325's rear.GY's. Above 75 degrees car hooks up in first with no wheelhop. The shift to second at 6600-6800 rpm produces no wheel hop. Only have 1000 miles on tires and am really satisified with thier performance.

Safety is one of the reasons why I tend to lean toward run flats. Another reason is rim protection, as stated in the OP's post, the rim was fine. While parking I hit a curb at a 45 degree angle and felt
The only damage was a quarter inch scratch on the edge of the rim. In either case a non flat would of encountered further damage. Something to think about when shopping for tires. As more cars come standard with run flats, more tire company's will come out with run flats, i.e. Michelin. Tire technology is always improving.

Well that's the trade off. For incidents like this, the run flat tire does what its supposed to do.
However the other thing a tire is supposed to do is perform. In this case the run flat fails miserably!

Yeah, just got to hate how the Z06 outperforms most cars on the track with those runflats.
Now if you were the OP's friend, guess what you would be doing. Some parts of Nevada can't even be reached by OnStar or a cell phone. Hope you were smart enough to bring some water.
Had a nail go through one of my runflats. the dealership
couldn't fix it. It was a slow leak. I had the dealership air the tire up to
45 psi and had to drive 2 hours to a city to get it fixed. IF i had a regular tire ,. It could of been repaired at the dealership. Or, for that matter at any tire shop. The goodyear tire shop that i took it to to be repaired (Appalachian Tire) in charleston,wv. The goodyear tire shop started to raise the vette on a flat lift !? Until i started yelling.
By the way, this was the closest goodyear shop that would work on
RUNCRAPS ! RANT TERMINATED
Do we even want to know why someone shot your tire?
they were not aiming at the tire, they [ he] pumped 5 rounds out at me and missed[4 guys didnt like gettin whooped by one pissed off vette owner] one of the party used the back of my car to relieve himself and i caught him [bar fight] shooter got 4 years in the slam.i got 1500.00 to repair the car [cost me 500.00 to fix quarter panel hole]
Great thread and I appreacate the validation of the run flat concept.
The run flats do me ok at the HPDE events I have attended as I am neither Johnny O'Connell or Ron Fellows. The F1 Supercar's are good and sticky when brought up to temp. While I am sure the PS2's are a far better track/street tire, I doubt my track times would demonstrate the difference
The runflats do me ok because the odds are that I will never need them, but the odds are that if I didn't have them I would end up in a situation where I wish I had them. At 56 years old, I have no real desire to try and repair a tire out on the road. Waiting for a repair truck can take hours and hanging around the roadside for any length of time can be dangerous.
Are the run flats perfect? Of course not, but I am satisfied with them for a car that is on the street far more than the track.
