Default Broken Leaf Spring

Took my 08 C6 Z51 to the dealer for the TSB rear differential fluid change and to have them check my suspension because I have had some pretty bad creaking coming from the rear when I go over speed bumps, driveways, etc. the past few days.Turns out I have a broken rear transverse leaf spring and they have to order the new spring which will take a few days. The bummer is that my wife and I were supposed to leave for a 3 day get away up the coast to celebrate our 30th wedding anniversary. The service dept says the car should be okay but I am a bit leary about driving it. Does anyone have an idea if this is okay, or do you think I should not drive it.

Thanks for any insight you guys may have on this subject.

Well that sucks! Did you hit a big pothole in the road or any idea how it happened?

I would not drive with a broken leaf spring. The dealer may have a way to get the part over night. Ask them to upgrade the order to "car inop".

I do not think I would take a long drive, maybe just short trips and keep the speed down. Seems if you hit a bump or ran over something, it could cause alot more damage. Afterall, the spring is there for a purpose, right?

Also, do you know the cause, is it defective, bad part, did it break by hitting something? Are they fixing it on warranty? Would like to know for my overall knowledge of the car, have 2008 z51 also.

It appears that it was a defective part and they are covering it under warranty. I found out last night that one of the members in my corvette club had the same thing happen to his 2008 Z51 and it has since been repaired. My replacement part is on order and it is shipping from Michigan. Even if were to show up today the service dept said they would need the whole day to repair and I am leaving this early evening. Anyway, it looks like we will be driving my wife's Tahoe for our vacation. Bums me out because driving the corvette is a big part of a weekend get-away. We are staying up the coast in Cambria and Paso Robles wine country. On the bright side, at least now we can store more cases of wine to bring home in the Tahoe.

Thanks to all for your input

Peter

Sounds like a great trip. Look at it this way; maybe something would have happened to the Vette on this particular trip. Have a great time...

Can you post a picture of where you see this broken spring so the rest of us will know where to look?

I would not take it on a trip.. Should you have to react to an emergency situation, the car might not respond normally.

Warranty Item, then have them provide you a replacement vehicle for your trip. No reason to put the miles on your car.

Look at it this way, you dont have to drive the Vette down those bumpy dirt roads now that lead to the winerys, Tahoe will take them no problem!

My wife also mentioned this as well. The last time we were up in Paso Robles a few months ago, we hooked up with my sister and brother in law and drove in their SUV to some amazing wineries that had long winding dirt roads that I would have otherwise never driven my C6 on. We just left the vette at our hotel that day. Turns out that we found what is now our favorite winery ("La Venture"). We were invited to attend a private barrel tasting that was awesome.

Good Idea!

I will take a picture when I go back to the dealer next week to pick my car up.

Thats a bummer but dont let that stop your anniversary, Hertz has a Vette that you can rent for your getaway... Dont let a broken spring ruin your important days.
