Been a vette owner for quite a few years now and have always enjoyed driving them. Every once in a while I get the comment that I drive one of these because I am compensating for some "shortcoming" or it's a middle age crazy thing.
Since I'm confident both of those statements don't fit my situation, I'm wondering what do people say to women who drive vettes?
A Corvette (or any high priced car) obviously feeds the ego for one reason or another. It's up to you to understand why. Nothing wrong with it, but there's always a reason.
People only make those comments when they're trying to compensate for their envy.
I don't think that's necessarily the case. There are many who are not "car people" and just don't understand the desire for a nice or fast car. I think some of them then start making assumptions.
Personally, I've loved nice, fast cars (especially muscle cars) since my youth but until I retired I never felt that buying one was a responsible use of my money. Once I finally arrived at that point I bought the Vette. I don't think that's compensating for anything...other than the (self imposed) inability to indulge myself earlier.
No one's ever said anything one way or the other (to my face) about me owning a Corvette. At my age, probably the same one that applies to men.....midlife crisis. I always knew that someday I would own a Corvette and when the right one came along I jumped on it. Eleven years later I'm on my third Corvette and still lovin every minute of it.

That's my story...and I'm stickin' to it!
That's true as well. My girlfriend has never owned a fast car and usually just chugs around in her Jeep. While I let her drive my car she was like "Ya know, I've never been a sports car person or understood that whole culture, but after driving this I do!"
My cousin also said something similar about never really being sure if he like speed, but then he punches it and says "but I f'ing love it!"
In my experience its been mostly jealousy that provokes these types of comments. I didn't buy my Corvette to "compensate" for something. I bought my Corvette because they're beautiful, have a pretty awesome history, my dad has one, they're fun, they get a lot of looks, and they truly are a stroke of genius in my opinion.
