Default Headers

OK Im a moron so here it goes. Can someone explain to me in moron language whats the difference between all these headers. Im leaning towards LG but there are so many I dont know. What makes one better than the other? How does one produce more HP than the other? Arent they all pretty much the same since they have to be cut the same shape and all to match whats existing? Please explain this for me so I can make an educated choice....

Thanks

Jerry

Different length primaries have the most to do with it I would imagine.

I'm not too smart about it either...So moron to moron the top brands are all good choices. American Racing, Kooks, LG to name a few. I have the AR headers, and I think they are excellent. I think these 3 brands are used by most of the tuners on this Forum.

There are slight differences in design (merge collectors, etc.) and not all manufacturers use the same quality steel or construct to the same standards. LGM, Kooks and American Racing are all well respected brands. For my money I had to have LG Pro long tube headers (which are cut by Borla). I also opted to have my LGM headers coated.

Here's what Jet Hott says about coating:

The coating promotes denser, more potent fuel/air charges by insulating the engine bay from exhaust heat.

Also, it accelerates the pulsed-vacuum effect on “tuned” headers, resulting in more effective scavenging of cylinders. The increased velocity of exhaust gases produced by higher exit inertia not only clears each cylinder more quickly; it also draws in the next fuel/air charge more efficiently.

Im leaning towards the LG But the AM are looking good too. Can you coat any header or is that something you have to order?

I would stick with one of the big three. You do not have to coat stainless steel, (mine are not coated, still up in the air if a coated header retains too much heat. Do a search on this topic). The header will discolor up at the heads, but will not rust like carbon steel headers. Are you going to have the car tuned after header install. I would talk to your tuner and see what he prefers, that might give you some direction. Good luck, if the car responds like mine did, you will next be hunting some tires that will stick..

, I called Branden from MarylandSpeed and got the Kook's with Jet Hot coating, the coating makes the headers sparkle in your engine compartment and it keeps the temp down. Very well made headers and you cannot go wrong with MarylandSpeed.

But as was said the 3 top header companies are Kooks, LG Motorsports (pro series) and American Racing.
