Haven't had the car more than a week and some inconsiderate A-Hole already dinged my door.
What is the best way to remedy this? I was thinking of getting some paint touch up, but it usually comes out like crap. I've heard that the best way of applying it is to put a little on your finger and swipe the chip with it.
Man that $uck$! I've had success using a toothpick to apply touch-up paint on my DD. I agree that you may want to consult with a bodyshop to have the spot "professionally" touched-up.
I don't know if it's worth filing a claim with the insurance co. Do you know where it happened? I ask because someone ding and dented the crap out of my DD a few years ago...at work of all places! Boy was I pissed! It's always nice when one of your friendly co-workers sticks it to you! Anyway (rant off) it cost me about $125 for the repair at a bodyshop...goodluck!
That sucks. I have had good success using the GM touch up paint on non metallic colors. If you go the the DIY channel web site for the old car restoration show there is a great lesson on how to apply the paint and smooth it so that it is almost invisible.
I have also used the guy my local dealer uses to fix the scratches on their used cars. If you have a dealer near you ask the used car sales manager. The guy was able to repair a fairly severe scratch to my C5 (MY). He advised me his techniques worked on vertical surfaces, but not on horizontal surfaces like the hood.
But yeah, consult a body repair shop instead of doing it yourself unless your 100 % positive it will come out right. I personally wouldn't take the risk because I'm no professional at using touch up paint on a car like this.
Anyways, good luck to you and I hope it turns out alright.
I've heard good things about a product called Touchup123. Google them for more info.
Personally though, I would bring it to a good body shop and have it done right. If you don't you will always be looking for it.
Judging from the picture and the size, it should be fairly easy to do yourself if it does not need to be perfect. You should touch it up with GM Touch Up in thin coats (dry thoroughly between coats) and after the color completely covers it, watersand with 2000 ultrafine sandpaper and polish.
Worst case scenario is you screw it up and has to go to the bidy shop anyway.
Try it. You may be surprised. Reds are easy to do.

I think I'm going to go with the Lanka kit. Heard good things about it.

If your insurance rates will not be affected (I heard some policies may increase your rates-very unusual however), go there first. With your estimators written report go to a body shop for an opinion. From there make your decision if it's just a touch-up or if you want them involved.
Hate it when some a-hole pulls in tight and opens the door!
Too bad You didn't catch them! I onced waited an hour for a big fatty
to waddle back to the scene. Cars were still side by side. I said I waited for you! Now were both waiting for the cops,They confirmed
two dents she made by matching them up. Long story short, got it fixed
and her ins. company paid to get it fixed. Would do it again In a
minute!
I'm sorry about the ding on your door. I tried a touch-up 'paint pen' once and it was horrible. I had the correct color but it was way too dark...it didn't match at all. I suggest you have it touched-up by a professional. IMO many DIY paint repairs looks like a DIY job. Get it done right!
I would not involve your insurance company under any circumstances.
From my past experiences, virtually all body shops will tell you that they have to paint half of your car, for $$$$$.
The best person to fix this kind of damage is the guy that takes care of the dealer's used car inventory. Usually there are a few people that go from dealer to dealer. One franchise that I remember is Colors on Parade.
