'Love bugs' will definitely etch the clearcoat of a paint job.
Because of those nasty bugs we have in Florida. I clean the front of my car each time I drive it. If you leave those bugs on for more than 24 hours you can count on having a permanent scar.

There is a product called BUG RELEASE made by a brand called WIZARD'S. I get it at my local paint store and it works like a miracle. The stuff makes the bugs come off completely and that is what you want, to prevent them from etching. It neutralizes the bug acid also. You spray it on and wipe the bugs off. I use it when I wash the car and let it set a few minutes and the bugs fall right off when you spray the car. Of course you always want to keep the wax of rejex or what ever of your choosing for protection.

If you don't clean them off within a couple of days then it will etch thru the paint then there's nothing you can do. After being on the highway I check the front. A wet rag will take them off. A good coat of wax helps.
To help remove residual bug bodies that do not come off with a normal wash, I use the same car washing soap and use a small piece of indoor/outdoor carpet and soak it in the washing soap and lightly scrub the front bumper. The gray NY vette with all the bug splatters in this post would be a simply removal with my device. Here in Florida we have giant bugs at night so I know what works for me.
If bugs are reaaaally bad, I'll take a long pool towel, soak it in water and let sit on the bumper for 10 minutes to "soften" the little bugger's carcasses.
A few years ago I bought a new Vette and was down the Jersey shore for a few weeks. Apparently a seagull crapped on my back hatch and by the next morning the poop had etched the black paint. I had no idea that crap was so powerful!
