For what it's worth, I discovered what I think is a big advantage to the OnStar system.
We were on a road trip last week and spent the night at a remote location. Neither my cellphone nor my wife's could get a signal. Both use the Verizon network, just lilke the OnStar phone.
I decided to try the OnStar phone and it worked perfectly! I'm told the ordinary cellphones are limited to something like 7/10 of a watt output and of course they have a tiny antenna. Apparently the OnStar unit has something like 3.5 watts of output and a much more efficient antenna.
It all adds up to being able to connect when it counts. I like that a bunch!
I like the hands free and shared verizon minutes but dislike that I can't call my voicemail or anyone that requires additional number prompts. Unless I'm missing something?

This is nothing new. I've taken my OnStar equipped Suburban on many large, organized trail rides (horseback)...most all on remote ranches in southeastern Arizona. There are often hundreds of riders...guys using virtually every cell phone service imaginable. I've seen guys trying to get a line out with their hand-held cell phones without success. The only one's able to get a line out are the few guys with Iridium satellite phones and those using OnStar phones. I'm convinced, the OnStar phone will often work when conventional cell phones won't.
Thanks for sharing this. I use my Verizon phone with some regularity in the car, but I've never tried the Onstar phone. Can you call anyone but Onstar with it?

To the network, it's just another Verizon phone. You can add it as an additional line to your Family Share plan for $9.95 a month and have the minutes and access of your Verizon plan. That cost is in addition to your OnStar subscription.
