i do my undersides the lazy way. never have driven the 07 C6 or my 03 Avalanche in the rain. my CTS gets the "rain" duty. please don't bother to ask why. for those who can't stand it, the answer is because i can. if you can't or don't care, that's ok with me. do what you like. everybody is happy here .
How do you know that it would have rusted without all that oil? Oiling the underneath seems like a messy unadvisable and unnessary activity to me.
Drive my cars everyday here in MI. This really works. Bolts don't seize from corrosion - aren't even rusty. Displaces the salt, dirt, grime... If you wrench on your car(s) yourself this is amazingly helpful. I'm not the least bit **** - I am a proponent of the car wash... Will drive my C6 in any amount of snow with salt and all... I know from experience. Don't knock it...
Simplist and easiest way is to find a bruchless carwash that has a bottom blast on it. I drive my vettes year round and I do this every spring. My 06 looked clean as could be.
I thought I was obsessive. But, hey I would love to buy a used car from the OP. Hats off to you. I looked at the thread because I may just start cleaning under the car.
Yes I also clean under my Corvette. I do not like the look of the white powder that coats the aluminum suspension parts. My 03 rarely saw rain and was not used in the winter once the roads were salted. I have winter cars for winter driving. My new 08 needed cleaning underneath because it was on the dealer's lot for months near the ocean and the salt air had coated the aluminum with that crusty powder. The $71,321 MSRP made it slow to sell but the deep discounts finally got me to move up to a C6. Owning a lift makes it easier to keep the car clean.
Most Corvette enthusiats are very **** about keeping there cars looking brand new. When I sold my 98 Convertible the buyer asked me to jack it up so that he could check out the underside before making his decsion to buy it. He was impressed that a 5 years old car looked like it was brand new even though it had 27K miles on it.
Everyone has [or should have] something they like. Some like to keep their garden pristine, some like their cars.
The garden example is not quite right... cleaning the outside of the car is comparable to keeping a prestine garden... The bottom is another story... Thats like comparing it to someone who loves having the bottom of his shoes clean, so all they do is tippy toe around...
Now as far as the "worth" - whats "worth" more, driving whenever you want without a worry in mind, or driving only when whether permits with the constant worry that your car will get a smudge of dirt on it?
I think many folks that go to this sort of extreme (and this includes people that put their car away for winter, people that keep their car bottom shiny, people that don't drive in the rain, etc) really are missing out... I can't even imagine denying myself the simple joy of driving in the rain bc I don't want the bottom of my car to get dirty...
I clean my car for stress relief. I will drive my car in the rain though probably want take it out if it is raining. I don't like extra work. I usually wipe out the wheel wells, after a day of driving, with damp paper towels. It takes about four hours to clean the suspension after a rain storm, remember it's stress relief. I don't drive my good cars in the winter, unless the roads are dry and free of salt. One winter operation in snow/ice will take the newness right out of any car. I keep the car nice for "me" and will trade when the nice isn't nice enough.

(next paragraph not aimed at Larry)
I personally have never cleaned the underside of a car on purpose other than undercarriage wash at a car wash, but I can see where some people who like to keep their vehicle clean would do that. To some, the Vette is just another car, to others, it may be the fulfillment of a dream. Let them enjoy the car, whether that means driving it and wearing it out in a few years or just taking meticulous care of it. Nobody is right or wrong.
OMG i drive mine in the rain and dont wash underneath and its got 47k on it. does that guy have the dyno results of increased perf. of a cleaner underside ? unreal
