Here's the deal. I'm picking up a new 09 coupe, then driving it about 1300 miles back home. Does these cars come with a lug wrench or do I have to buy a socket and bar for the trip back. If I have to buy a socket what size do I get? I've had new wheels loosen before and I don't want to get caught in the middle of mow here at 2AM with a loose wheel.

I use a 3/4" deep dish 6 point socket. Set to 100 ft lbs. No tools with my '07 and i would assume the same for the '09.
Go to sears and get a 1/2 inch drive 19mm or 3/4inch socket{does not have to be a deep well} and get the "sears" brand" half inch drive "breaker bar" it's cheaper than the "craftsman" and has a nice polished finish and it fits in the little boxes in back!

So, the size is 3/4" but we get no tools.
Thank you.
I wouldn't worry members have picked-up there cars at the Museum and logged well over 1K miles and no one reported having any problems which required a tool.

I prefer the deep socket because I don't like my hand so close to the car and i don't like using and extension because I feel it could affect the tq reading.

Should this be a concern? I never thought of checking my lugnuts.
I've found the torque to be at half the required foot pounds on a couple of cars. I checked at around 500 miles. Most wheel aftermarket folks will tell you to check alloys at a couple of hundred miles after installation.
I guess for peace of mind and 'cause I trust me, I'll buy a couple of tools when I pick up the car. Spending 5 minutes time can save a world of hurt.

I wonder if I should bring mine on the plane.
The Corvette is in metric sizes...use the proper tool for the job...get a 19mm deep socket for the wheel lug nuts. Using a flex handle bar or 'breaker bar' is best to break the lug nuts loose but without a torque wrench you're just guessing when it comes to tightening the lug nuts. FWIW I'm partial to Craftsman tools...I use their 1/2" drive Mircrotork torque wrench for the lug nuts.
I wouldn't be particularly worried about torquing the lug nuts just to drive home but if it makes you feel safer...check them. Instead of bringing tools on the airplane why don't you just stop by a Discount Tire (or a similar shop) near the factory and check them?

I'm buying the car in NH, hopefully be on the road by 5PM. Plan is to be south of Ricmond VA by 5AM So sometime at a fuel stop on the NJTP I'm checking them. I'll buy the tools in NH. Thanks for th 19mm info.
I immediately drove my car 870 miles after buying it and checked the lugs after getting back home. They were all about 90 to 95 ftlbs. Not loose enough to cause any problems. I'd say you can get by till you get home.
