I would not take any chances with an engine failure due to a something questionable with the oil. This could also be a warranty issue. Don't take the chance.
Thats nonsense... There is nothing that states you need to use Mobil 1 in the vette..
Any oil meeting GM specs will work just as well.. You people need to get a life and quit believing all the marketing BS.
If the oil is 5W-30 and meets GM 4718M, then you should be ok. If not, you MIGHT be ok but GM could easily deny warranty coverage if something went wrong with your engine. I doubt the dealer will pony up a new engine for you, and fighting GM in court would cost more than the new engine.
When the thread about Mobil-1 allocations came out, I went to the local WalMart and bought two of the 5 qt jugs, they had plenty on the shelves. Yesterday, NO 5W-30 and darned little of the other grades.
Seems to be plenty of Mobile One in the stores around me. I bet you could find it a number of places; maybe even on sale. Any reason you can't buy it yourself and bring it in to them?
I found Mobil One at K-mart (CNY) this week on sale for 2 for 11 bucks, All other stores were out of 5-30.. Being this is my first oil change with Mobil one is that a good price???
Presume you mean 2 Quarts for $11. It's not bad or good. Last week's sale at Costco ended with 6 Quarts for $23.50 incl. $9 discount coupon. I was in Target this weekend; here, it's about $5.69/quart.
As to OP, Zymurgy and your owner's manual are spot on: any synthetic has to meet the recommended spec from GM and that is some tech stuff called 4718M. Not all synthetics meet that spec; thus, not all are for your car. In a way, since this was done by your dealer, you have a receipt showing it by name of brand. It's therefore on them...maybe.

How the heck will they know exactly what oil is in there?
There is another thread on here talking about Mobil 1 being in short supply because refinery is still down because of hurrican. Retailers even put on allocations for their supplies.
This is true. Sounds like it has been covered elsewhere, but several here not yet aware of it. I get an e-periodical from Lubes 'n' Greases that had a story on this about a week ago. Due to the securing of their PAO plant, Mobil has put the 5w30 on a 20% allocation, meaning that stores are only getting 20% of what their typical orders are - stock up while you can if you are a Mobil 1 fan.

Blackstone Labs, which does a lot of used oil analysis, told me they frequently get samples from the auto manufacturers. Apparently, testing if the correct oil was used and approximately when it was changed regarding a warranty claim. I once sent in a sample and asked if it was actually Mobil-1 like the dealer had been charging me for, they said "Yes". Apparently they can tell the difference.

I wonder if anyone has been denied a claim based on this testing?

I asked that. Blackstone said they didn't get involved in the decision making process, they just tested the oil. But the Blackstone guy said he believed that some of the samples they tested did result in a warranty denial, for two reasons:
The samples sometimes indicated gross abuse (wrong oil, factory oil never changed out, etc)
and
The manufacturers wouldn't keep spending money to get the samples tested, if it didn't save them some money on warranty claims.
I work for a major process control company that helps control the process used to create Mobil One. I can tell you that the Beaumont Plant where Mobil One is created is one of the most consistently well-controlled plant out there.
Other oil may meet the same GM 4718M standard but I, for one, want the recommended product that I know is made in a very high-quality and consistent way. If it is good enough for GM and for the C6R race team, I'm sticking with it if at all possible.
