Went for an oil change at my dealership and they asked if they could substitute Quaker State Synthetic; due to supply problems there was no Mobil One to be had and the QS would neither void my warranty nor not do the job.......okay by me....any concerns?
In reality - no. Over the long run I've always heard it was best to use a single brand of oil - but in the short run I think you'd be hard pressed to find documentation of any harm by doing this once in awhile.
Be prepared - many on this forum have pretty strong feelings about lubrication brands - I predict you'll see posts for Amsoil, Royal Purple, etc. I've always used Castrol products and have run multiple vehicles into the 100K+ mileage range with NO oil related problems. So what do I use in the Vette? Mobil 1 because that is what is recommended. If I can't find that this fall for storage I'll use Castrol Syntec and not lose a moment's sleep over the decision.
While I prefer to run Mobil 1 because it is recommened... if I can't get Mobil 1 then any synthetic should be okay... no worries... (change back to Mobil 1 next time...
I searched the Quaker State web site and could not find anything that indicates that any of their synthetic oils meet GM4718M. Per the owners manual:
Look for two things:
• GM4718M
Your vehicle’s engine requires a special oil meeting
GM Standard GM4718M. Oils meeting this
standard may be identified as synthetic. However,
not all synthetic oils will meet this GM standard.
You should look for and use only an oil that meets
GM Standard GM4718M. Notice: If you use oils that do not have the
GM4718M Standard designation, you can cause
engine damage not covered by your warranty.
• SAE 5W-30
As shown in the viscosity chart, SAE 5W-30 is best
for your vehicle.
These numbers on an oil container show its
viscosity, or thickness. Do not use other viscosity
oils such as SAE 20W-50.
It also has the following on substitutes:
Substitute Engine Oil: When adding oil to maintain
engine oil level, oil meeting GM Standard GM4718M
may not be available. You can add substitute oil
designated SAE 5W-30 with the starburst symbol at all
temperatures. Substitute oil not meeting GM Standard
GM4718M should not be used for an oil change.
If you have something in writing from your dealer explaining why they are using a different oil you should be ok. I always keep enough Mobil One on hand for two oil changes.

Be ok doky!! top brand oil companies are all very similiar these days. Some house brands stuff i would stay away from tho, not to name names but if a parts store has there name on there oil I would stay away from using it on the vette. Quaker, mobil, castrol all top notch. IMO
There is another thread on here talking about Mobil 1 being in short supply because refinery is still down because of hurrican. Retailers even put on allocations for their supplies.

Seems to be plenty of Mobile One in the stores around me. I bet you could find it a number of places; maybe even on sale. Any reason you can't buy it yourself and bring it in to them?

I found Mobil One at K-mart (CNY) this week on sale for 2 for 11 bucks, All other stores were out of 5-30.. Being this is my first oil change with Mobil one is that a good price???
I agree that most major brands are probably pretty reliable. I am an AMSOIL nut, I use it in everything I own with a motor, including my lawn mower and farm tractor. You could avoid supply problems in the future by contacting AMSOIL and opening a "Preferred Customer Account". You can buy from them much cheaper that retail and always have some on hand. Enrollment is free and for the record, I don't work for amsoil, I just really like their product.

Just meet the minimum requirements for oil specified by GM.. You will be fine with any brand you use..
I would not take any chances with an engine failure due to a something questionable with the oil. This could also be a warranty issue. Don't take the chance.
