I was always unhappy with the "road rash" that formed on the fender edge behind the front tires so I installed the new GM flaps. They are just big enough to provide the protection to that area. I don't know if they are going to protect the whole side, but I never had a big problem with that. I am really happy with the GM flaps and they look great on my new Cyber Gray. In my opinion, they should come from the factory with them.
Yes, it keeps the crud off the paint. You'll still get some crud up under the panel your reverse lights are on. The other day I went out doing doughnuts at Charlotte Motor Speedway (Lowes) and the grass was wet, I had a muddy mess but not on the paint.
The thing that I have seen chipped or "abraded" most of all on the C6 is the trailing edge of the wheel well. For this the GM splash guards are outstanding. Personally, I really like them. They integrate extremely well into the appearance - they're there but they aren't overwhelming. I don't drive my car on gravel, sand, in the rain (unless I'm "caught") or in the winter so I don't really test them compared to someone who does the above. If you go through a big old mud pit they aren't going to do anything to help you - but that isn't their purpose either. Hope that helps. They are easy to install.
I find that they give great protection around the wheel well lip and the sides. The rears go below the wheel well a small amount but the fronts are almost perfectly flush with the bottom of the wheel well so the bottom of the rocker panels may catch some gravel.
I have not seen this as a serious problem yet (I've driven to mid Maine and back)as anything that does hit will be at an steep angle with more of a glancing blow and not directly visible.
They are great looking and look like they came as standard equipment.
I have been running hem since they came out, and I agree they keep almost all the junk off the painted surfaces. As some others have mentioned, stuff still gets on the back diffuser (by the backup lights), and GM probably should have extended the rears downward a little (more like the Z06) to prevent this. But for $100 they work great and they look like they belong on the car.
I put on the GM splash guards and I am very happy with them. Looks great and offers some protection. Really flows with the lines of the car. The install is easy except for the bottom push pins on the rear! Do it, I'm sure you will like them.
Ed's are fantastic. I put them on right after I bought my car and went down a post winter mountain road. I heard the tires picking up the rocks but with the guards I didn't need to worry.
I too have Eds (pipedreams) put them on in the dealer before driving off the lot!!
Remember your always going to get some dirt on the car, but the guards protect the pebbles and rocks from scratching the paint...
