The 2005 Corvette was the first to get the push button start. All sixth generation Corvettes 2005-? have the pushbutton start.

I think Lexus may have been the first to offer.

Good point John. I made an assumption (since this was the Corvette forum) that the OP meant when the Corvette first got the push button start.

I thought the modern push button starter had its origins from racing cars where the feature allowed rapid re-starts if required. For production cars, didn't some very old vehicles have a push-button starter located on the floorboard (perhaps used in conjuction with a key)?

Personally, I think the C6 keyless, push-button starter is a great feature.

Some even had them on the dash. They were just starter switches. You had to hold them in to run the starter.

The old Jaguar XKE's had the start button on the dash. You have to turn the ignition to the on position with your key, then push the button to start. Had it on my '67 coupe and my '71 roadster.

My '62 Morris Minor 1000 had one, and a crank start too.

I think my Dad's `51 Packard required that you push the accelerator to the floor to engage the starter . . . .but I think it still had a key in the huge steel dash.

When the starter contacts in my '64 Karmann Ghia burned out I mounted a push button on the dash. Turn the key to on and push the button to turn the starter motor. Not quite the same thing though.

First car I ever saw with keyless push button start was a Prius. Probably not the first to have it.

When I graduated from high school in 1966 I bought a 1932 five window Ford coupe with a push botton start. Paid $1,300.00 for it, wish I still had it. I'd like to know when they went from push botton to ignition start with a key?

My 1931 Model A Ford has a pedal on the floor, but you do need a key in the ignition.
