exhaust rumble
I work with sound professionally and am interested in this. While I understand how / why firing order could potentially change the sound so to speak, I'd like to look at the specs / facts myself.
I'm thinking the LSX sonic weakness has more to do with the exhaust system in general, that's my guess at this point.
There are LSXs in GTOs too... how do the GTOs sound? From some clips I've heard, the GTOs DO sound a little "better".
Damn, my little DOHC 4.6 Mustang GT does sound more like a classic musclecar than my C6... I think this goes beyond just firing order... though I'll hold back on that statement until I look at the actual firing order specs.
My old Pontiac 455 had a unique sound... definitely very "classic musclecar", but yet a bit different than a lot of the other popular musclecars... all Pontiac V8s for that matter had a unique sound... I will look at that firing order as well, I do still have those specs somewhere... wait, I think I remember them... 1-8-4-3-6-5-7-2....? If I'm right, then I must have a computer inside my brain since I have not worked on a Pontiac in over 20 years... this firing order just came to me.
Valve-timing / cam size surely has a lot to do with exhaust note... one reason the Pontiacs had a slightly more "classy" sound is because many of them had cams that were not so wild... even the cam I ran in my 455 (close to a Supy Duty cam) had wide lobe centers and thus minimal relative overlap... sounded tamer than a big-cammed smallblock Chevy but still had a very menacing rumble and a chilling roar once in action.
Boy, I'd love to get my C6 sounding a bit more like classic American V8 iron... but apparently, this IS a near impossible task since I don't think I have yet heard a C6 with a true classic musclecar rumble... though I am still curious to hear a Corsa Touring in person that is said to have a low-frequency rumble and not too loud... perhaps that's as close as we can get? Stock is good enough for me for now.
Frequency has a lot to do with it... classic musclecars generally had a lower-frequency sound... part of this could be due to longer / larger exhaust systems, the longer the pipes, the lower the frequency they will likely resonate at... but I'm sure there's more to it. The C6 does have a very short, simple exhaust system though it seems... likely at least part of the problem... the car is small, nothing can be done about that.
What I cannot stand personally is the high-pitched spitting exotic-type sound... a C6 passed me a few weeks ago, the guy got on the throttle and it sounded like a tiny European sissy-mobile... not sure what exhaust he had, but... ugghh, that was disgusting and disgraceful... like Clint Eastwood wearing pink ballerina slippers or something, just doesn't make sense.
